I'm contemplating which animal companion (limited to the core books) to pick for my Ranger once the opportunity arises, and I have a couple questions: - Does the level penalty for alternative companions (e.g., -6 for a dire wolf) simply balance out the fact that the alternative animals are more powerful to start with? As in, at Ranger 14, would a level 1 dire wolf be about as powerful as a level 7 wolf I could get instead? - Are there any beasts in particular I should be looking at (as an archery-focused Ranger), or is it more a roleplaying decision than anything?
