Animal Companion Size? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-10-06, 05:52 PM Just checked the animal companion table, and according to it 5th level druid could have a wolf as an animal companion with 4 HD which makes it qualify for large size according to the MM. The animal companion table mentions nothing about that though. It specifies pretty much everything that changes as an animal grows, except for size. I double-checked both the monster rules and the AC rules and can't come up with a clear answer, what do you guys think?. It would make sense for the wolf to grow bigger as time passes but it would also be pretty overpowered, what with the +8 STR +4 CON.

04-10-06, 06:15 PM I'm pretty sure it just gains Hit Dice but doesn't advance in size (I don't have the books on me ATM.) Thus, it doesn't get the SRT/CON boosts, Natural Armor, etc. accociated with going up in size. (Those are size bonuses, so if it doesn't get bigger, it doesn't get them: it doesn't get the -1 to hit/AC for being large if its still medium, why should it get the other bonuses?)

04-10-06, 07:09 PM It doesn't grow in size and you don't use the advancement rules from MM. Normally, I'd quote the rules, but I'm too lazy right now :P Additionally there are already about a hundred threads here on the boards explaining this.
