How do you handle armour for animal companions in the system?

From the SRD for animal type

---
—Proficient with no armor unless trained for war.

What proficiencies do you gain, and what constitutes 'trained for war'? Handle Animal allows for 'attack', 'fighting' and 'combat riding'.

I'm struggling to find any more references. Any suggestions (preferably with references to core rules)

Thanks

In Masters of the Wild there are some new tricks you can learn to your companion. One of them is that the companion is willing to wear armor.

My player and I agreed that it would only allow the companion the same armor types as a druid is allowed to use.

Thanks for that, that covers whether the animal is willing or not, though as a druid I'd just asked :)

Proficiency remains an issue though

Horses, trained for war, wear barding without penalty (beyond the hit to weight allowance).

I can't see any problem with getting "barding" type armor for any other kind of beast that is trained to use it.

My druid's wardog wears barding OK, but it says in the Wardog description that they are trained for war. So they should be able to wear barding. He currently wears leather scale barding from Arms and Equipment, just like my druid.

I think training a tiger or deinyceroniusaurus or whatever would be a bit trickier, but not impossible. Especially if you've maxed out Handle Animal and apply the +4 bonus for the animal companion to the training skill check.
