lowendz113 12-06-06, 03:06 PM	Are there any rules to get a dragon as an animal companion? I know there are rules for a dragon familiar, but I cant find anything for animal companaion. The reason I ask, is because we are going to be playing a dragon based game coming up, and someone brought up this idea.

Banatine 12-06-06, 03:51 PM	you can get dragon cohorts, dragon familiars, and dragon special mounts, but for animal companions they would be too powerful. i've always thaought that pseudodragon should be on the animal companion list. you could always rule 0 it in. or alternatively, use one of the classes from the forums. i have one that is an update of another persons dragon rider-type class, so i can post that one up for you if you like. that one gets a dragon as an animal companion (kind of).

Darth Sephiroth 12-06-06, 05:07 PM	I think that there is a feat for a Draconic Animal Companion in the Draconomicon. Dragons just aren't animals for the most part as the ability implies, intelligent creatures are normally more of Cohorts.

Not sure how someone could say that a dragon is too powerful as an animal companion but not too powerful as a cohort or familiar or special mount. Obviously you would get an animal companion dragon much later than 4th level (Since your druid level would be considered lower than normal) and it would still be of the same general power as say a dragon familiar (After all it's the same creature). Trust me, having had a dragon cohort, small, young dragons are not an overbalancing thing. The Druid already has mechanics built in for 'more powerful' companions, so it should be easy to allow it using those rules. Harliquinn

nightwyrm 12-07-06, 01:51 PM	If the campaign is dragon-centric one, having a dragon animal companion would be extremely favourful and fun. A wyrmling probably won't unbalance things too much anyways at the level the pc would be getting him. Besides, you'll probably need to give a portion of your treasure to the dragon (coz dragons like to hoard) just to keep him happy. The role-playing opportunities with a baby talkative brass or prankster copper would be very interesting. Anyways, the thing to do would be talking with the DM and see if he'll agree.
Darth Sephiroth 12-07-06, 04:13 PM	You may be able to convince your DM to allow you to gain a bonus to the Dragon Cohort or Dragon Mount feats level equivalence for your Dragon by sacrificing your Animal Companion, though a Draconic Animal Companion is much more fitting with the actual ability
The_Shaman 12-07-06, 07:35 PM	I think a dragon is better as a cohort, really. An animal companion is just that, an animal that tags around and helps you, and every true dragon would be way too willful and - well, smart - for that. Having a dragon as an AC is selling it way too cheap.
