I'm trying to make a 2nd lvl Druid an have an animal companion but how many Hit Die can it have? The sample gives a Wolf but is that the olny one I can get? I would like to have a Lion or a Tiger or other big cat or other animal just not a wolf.

You can have all kind and number of animals you like as long as their total HD's are not greater than your druid level (except at 1st level you can have 2 HD's worth of animals).
It's all well explained in the PHB and in the Animal Friendship spell (also see Masters of the Wild if you have it available).

According to 3e rules, you can have as many animal companions as you want, as long as no single animal has more HD than you have druid levels, and the total HD of all your animal companions is no more than twice your druid level.

That's only for stationary druids, usually for those maintaining a grove. For druids that roam and adventure, it's just your Druid level. You can't have more total HD of animal companions than your Druid level.
