There is a comprehensive table in PHB II that includes all animals available for companions...but legendary animals aren't included. It seems odd that creatures that were created for that very purpose are now illegal for it. Does anyone have an idea why they might be omitted? Anyone use them in their campaigns?

They weren't included because they were created for the 3.0 rules, where animal companions didn't get any more powerful as the druid gained in levels. Since that's how standard companions work anyway, the rules are obsolete and unnecessary in 3.5.

In short, it's no accident they haven't been updated.

Interesting . . . I've always sort of disliked legendary animals. No one ever uses them in encounters -- they seem to exist solely to make druids extra-uber.

In particular, the "legendary ape druid" is both silly and questionably balanced.

So starting now, druids can't use can't use legendary animals in my game (either for animal companions or wild shape).
