Animal companions, whats better? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-30-05, 05:27 PM I'm trying to determine what gives me a better advantage at higher levels.

One of the basic companions that get the full bonuses to their hit dice or the biggest baddest animal companion I can get from the list.

For brute strength & combat power It kinda looks like the second option sounds better but for utility & tricks the first one seems more advantageous.

Can you help me decide?

09-30-05, 05:39 PM Gotta love them vipers (Medium size IIRC). And wolves, they rock (cliché or no cliché).

09-30-05, 05:44 PM Depends on what you want to do with them, really. If you're using a warmount, it's usually advisable to go with a nice large-sized creature at low levels and stick with it. Dire bats are good for that, as are horses.

If you want a gopher that can sneak about, take one of the lower-teir companions and max the specials. The dire rat of a 9th level druid can be quite useful.

If you want something to rip foes to shreds, go with the highest tier beasie you can find.
