I know there are a thousand of these; this one is short, especially because the class modification hasn't been made (yet).

After reading a legacy weapons thread, particularly a comment about giving a fighter a better sword so he could match a mage, I thought of this idea: what if the fighter, in addition to his free feats, advanced his weapon of choice as a Kensai from CW does? What would be a balanced progression for the weapon?

Thanks for reading this.

Not a bad idea, but not really a good fix. Hell, look at the Soul Knife, that class revolves around a signature weapon and it sucks(although, only because it needs full BAB and maybe a variant for Psychic Strike).

No, the Fighter needs more feats and some special treatment for some feats(such as Martial Study & Stunning Fist)

What that is, is a Money Saving Idea. It basically gives the Fighter more gold to spend on Something Else, and makes sure that regardless of the campaign, the Fighter has his Magic Sword.

+200k at level 20 gives a fighter a nice degree of more flexibility, and even at lower levels will probably be useful. This is a very easy and workable idea that would fit nicely into any campaign without overpowering the fighter. However, it also isn't going to satisfy all the naysayers coming out with "Fighter is dependent on his gear!" arguments.

Even saving money, freeing some up for more gear, the Fighter would still be lacking in legitimate combat ability. It doesn't really fix anything, especially in games where a DM is generous with gear or gives each player a spiffy weapon.

If the Fighter still can't fight, some extra gear won't help very much.

Loneflame,

Do you think the fighter should be more of a martial adapt instead? Also, what do you think of the Kensai prestige class itself?

I'm glad you guys like the idea, even if it isn't quite what you're looking for. :P

This statement is just asking for a flame war. The Fighter has plenty of legitimate combat ability. What he doesn't have is versatility outside of combat.

Having an extra 200k would actually go quite a ways towards solving that problem. The Fighter could spend it on expensive things like inherent bonuses, which is what, say, a mage would do, or he could get a wide variety of gear useful in a lot of situations.

Combat power is not the problem of the Fighter. Power outside combat is.

If you go on the regdar's board and read my fighter/warblade thread, or even the original post, it pretty much summarizes up everything you could say about the fighter, good or bad. Go to the end of the thread, and I even post a barb and Fighter build using ToB style rules.
