| scout98903-10-05, 12:45 AM | Hello all this is my first post here. I'm currently creating a high-level cleric to join a game that has been in progress for a few years. However, I hear that cleric characters in this game tend to die- often. The character I'm creating is motivated solely by interest about his past- because he doesn't know anything about it. He's a cleric of a god of magic, hoping that if he studies enough, he may find/create a divination powerful enough to overcome the divine interference that overshadows any attempt he makes to discover more. Is there a class out there that is powerful enough for my character to survive in a darn tough game, and at the same time appropriate to his motivations? Where can I find it? |

Is forgotten realms material available? If so, first visit the Player's Guide to Faerun and look up initiate of Mystra. Second, are web enhancements allowed? If so, the Dwoemerkeeper of Mystra is a very useful class. It is found here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20040522a It makes the cleric into a spellcaster type but I find it really effective. Also note that you can cast out of your own anti-magic field with the feat; it is not a perfect solution but if enemy casters are the problem this will solve it in short order. |
| dulsin03-10-05, 10:10 AM | There are tons of great PRCs for clerics. Auspician Contemplative Excorsist Hospitaler Diviner ........ There are no shortage of killer PRCs for the divine classes. |
| scout98903-10-05, 11:18 AM | Dulsin- where do these classes come from? If they're CD, I haven't gotten to look at it yet but I will before I build this guy. Sorry I guess I wasn't precise enough- I'm looking for any PrC's outside of the core and splat books. Again, I haven't seen them all yet, but I will probably get to see quite a few of them before the build. Anything web-based would be perfect; I don't know if the DM will allow them, but I have to know what they are to ask for them. BTW Votan I looked up the dweomerkeeper and it could very definitely be some help- mainly the part about supernatural spell (I like bypassing SR :) ). |
| Dragon03-10-05, 02:51 PM | Complete Divine has some great prestige classes for clerics. I prefer cleric PrC's that advance spellcasting every level. Here is a quick summary of some of my favorites (all from Complete Divine): 1. Contemplative - Full spellcasting progression, two bonus domains, and some cool abilities. You mentioned that clerics die often in your upcoming campaign, so the HD (a d6) for this class may be a concern. 2. Divine Oracle - Full spellcasting progression, abilities that help divinations, some rogue-like abilities that may help you stay alive. 3. Geomancer - Full spellcasting progression, gains ability to use some arcane spells (can become a versatile caster), drifts (see CD for details). 4. Radiant Servant of Pelor - Full spellcasting progression, great for healing and turning undead. If Pelor is not a diety in your campaign there are guidelines for converting this PrC into your campaign. 5. Sacred Exorcist - Full spellcasting, great against undead or evil outsiders. In undead intensive campaingns, this one is nice to combine with Radiant Servant. If your DM allows Divine Metamagic, I recommend using the Extend - Persistant- Divine Metamagic (Persistant) route to make some of you buff spells last all day. Extra Turning is useful in this context. Complete Divine also has several useful clerical spells. Brambles, Spikes, the Vigor spells, and Visage of the Diety spells to name a few. Good luck with your game! |

ROFLOL If all you think about using that for is to bypass spell resistance...Your DM must love you! |
| scout98903-10-05, 03:16 PM | What am I missing? I know that's not all they get- 1-arcane sight- ok cool but not something I'd write home about 2-spont casting of other cleric spells- yes I am very excited by this and have been playing with ways to use it and abuse it if I can. It seems very useful indeed, but I can't see where it's immensely powerful either 3-no attacks of opportunity for supernatural spellcasting- again very very nice to have but I don't see what big deal I'm missing I don't mean any of this to be rude; I'm just laying out what I see and asking for input on what I'm missing here. |
| Votan03-10-05, 04:24 PM | If your DM allows Divine Metamagic, I recommend using the Extend - Persistant- Divine Metamagic (Persistant) route to make some of you buff spells last all day. Extra Turning is useful in this context. If you can't get persistant spell, Divine Metamagic [Quicken] is a great way to gain some really amazing tactical flexibility. In particular, quickening spells like Divine Power or Rightous Might can completely alter the results of an ambush. |
| BladeBoy03-10-05, 07:46 PM | Divine Agent from Manual of Planes is a good PrC too. |
| raidensnake_2k403-10-05, 09:19 PM | the sunmaster from lost empires is a decent class as is the darkmask from lords of darkness. |
| thefuzzzybear03-10-05, 09:26 PM | ive always enjoyed a nice warpriest, and forget where it is, sorry. |
| BladeBoy03-10-05, 09:34 PM | Defenders of the Faith, for one. |

Good luck with your game! Good list! Also from the CD is Seeker of the Misty Isle for elves and half-elves. You can combine it with Contemplative and get 4 bonus domains in all (SotMI grants Magic and Travel by level 7). The Book of Exalted Deeds has the Celestial Mystic and Fist of Raziel. The nicest thing about Geomancer is you can combine it with the feat Arcane Strike from Complete Warrior, and fuel that feat with your cleric spell slots. True Necromancer from Libris Mortis. Dracolyte from the Draconomicon is okay. |
| DreadWizardDM03-11-05, 03:30 AM | What about full caster progression PrC's for a Human NE cleric of Hades??? Prefer one that stacks with rebuke / controll undead. Anyone??? |
| GoofsterStud03-11-05, 03:40 AM | What am I missing? Let me explain the brokeness (I played one and had to kill it!) My first power gaming attempt and it was very close to the Cheater of Mystra! First thing the spell abilities require no component cost! GP, Items, XP are all considered component Costs! If you have limited wish woohoo You can cast any spell under that one cleric or wizard with now penalty!!!! If you have Miracle... Well just keep the miracles going and wish for a better place! These things have no penalty on you! Yet other people don't use them cause the penalty is huge. Example: I feel like having a better wisdom... Miracle, oh look their is a book of +6 inheritant wisdom bonus...however did that get there...LOL Now do your second Miracle and SU.... Oh look I have the whole book memorized in ten seconds... ROFLOL All on a down day! Or a night when you had those slots open. My favorite cleric built though is Fist of Raziel! (Sure you loose one spell level but it's awesome!) |
| scout98903-11-05, 09:26 AM | O.K. I see it now- when I read it I thought it meant only material components. Well I do see how broken that is, I really don't think the DM will let that one go, so it probably will end being material components is all that applies to. Even that can be a serious advantage, but I don't think that will break the character or the class. And if I do get away with no XP costs for supernarural spells, well I think that could be the thing that helps me survive session 1 with this group! With the weak attack/save progression I have to take to do this class the way I plan to, some sort of powerful ability is definitely needed. |
| Nyferto03-11-05, 12:58 PM | Strange how even those classes were stricken from the book. |
| Dragon03-11-05, 01:47 PM | If your DM allows PrC's from 3.0 sources, the Windwalker from Faiths and Pantheons looks very interesting. Some of the features include full spellcasting advancement, full BAB, and a bunch of useful abilities like airwalk and at tenth level the abilty to fly. If I remember right, the flight is at will and unlimited in duration. Here is a link with more information about the prereq's: Windwalker (http://http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/prestige2.pl?Windwalker) Also with regards to the Dweomerkeeper, if you can combine this with the Initiate of Mystra feat (from PGtF), this class becomes extremely versatile. This feat allows you a chance to cast in an antimagic field, use Anyspell and Greater Anyspell to obtain spells from the wizards list (combine this with the Mantle for spontaneous conversion). Combined with the quicken or persistant divine metamagic, this sound like one of the most powerful builds that I have read about. Good gaming! |
| Dragon03-11-05, 02:32 PM | Thanks, RT! Good call on the other PrC's. Another nice thing about the Seeker of the Misty Isle is the skill list. They get Listen, Spot, and Survival. I like having these skills because they help minimize ambushes and help "acquire" targets. These characters will probably not be the party scout, but it certainly helps to have these skills. |
| scout98903-11-05, 02:34 PM | K this may be dumb of me but what's PGtF? Guess I cant delete this but I just figured it out. |
| Grepp the Mighty03-11-05, 03:00 PM | ive always enjoyed a nice warpriest, and forget where it is, sorry. I loved the 3.0 Warpriest, but the 3.5 version has been essentially neutered. The most effective character I've ever ran was a straight cleric. He was a LN cleric of Tyr with the War and Retribution domains. He kicked butt. His favorite trick was to cast righteous might, enter melee, and after all the ememy combatants started coming at him, he would cast blade barrier. |
| BladeBoy03-11-05, 03:15 PM | K this may be dumb of me but what's PGtF? Guess I cant delete this but I just figured it out. Player's Guide to Faerun |
| God of Slivers03-11-05, 03:26 PM | Dweomerkeeper and Hulking Hurler are the most broken classes ever. I'm a powergamer and I wouldn't touch them. As for good prcs, any prc that gives you full casting progression is worth taking. If you plan on fighting lots of undead or would like to (ab)use divine metamagic and don't want to lose out on turning let me point you to the Radiant Servant of Palor. If you don't care about turning then just pick whichever prc best suits you. As long as it has full progression you won't regret it. |
| KP9103-11-05, 03:34 PM | If your a cleric to a god of magic then grab some levels in wizard or sorceror then take Mystic Theurge. The Heirophant is nice too. Or you could take Thaumaturgist to have creatures fight for you when your cleric is about to die. |
| scout98903-24-05, 12:34 AM | I agree that under the rules the Dweomerkeeper is as broken as you all say. But you know, the flavor fits my character idea so well that I'm going to use it anyway and just not even try to use the "no component" facet of Supernatural spell ability. But aI have not yet seen Anyspell and Greater Anyspell. I assume these are CA, and I only own CD, so can anyone fill me in a bit as to what they do? |

| scout98903-24-05, 03:13 AM | Ich spreche ein bisschen deutsch, und Ihren Englisch ist wirklich gut. Wohin in Deutschland kommen Sie? Es tut mir leid, aber es ist ja ungefahr 8 Jahren nach weil Ich Deutsch gelernt habe. Edit: think I meant "woher", not "wohin". Wow it's been a while. |
| FrinkiacVII03-24-05, 04:37 PM | Thaumaturgist is one of my favorite Cleric PrC's. It's in the 3.5 DMG but not the 3.0 one. It's only a 5 level PrC, but it's level stack with your cleric le4vesl for spellcasting purposes and at level 5 in it, you get to buy yourself a cohort that's an Outsider. I think it allows you to trade up for a new one when you outlevel the old one too. The only restrictions are that it has to be an Outsider, it's ECL has to be, ay most, 2 less than your own, and you have to pay a single, up-front lump sum equal to like 1000gp times it's hit dice. Since you can slap Half-Celestial or Half-Feind onto almost anything and thus turn it into an Outsider, this gives you a lot of options for a really boss cohort. You could take a cohort that casts divine spells and let it do most of the healing for you while you cast more Flame Strikes etc, or you could just get a really good melee bodyguard type. |
