Any prepared arcane classes besides wizards and associated PrCs? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm just wondering: are there any prepared arcanist classes besides wizards and prestige classes? In particular, I'm thinking a prepared arcanist without a full nine spell level progression: i.e., something like an "arcane ranger," "prepared hexblade," or a "prepared bard," with 4-6 spell levels.

Thanks.

The only other spell-preparing arcanist I know of is the Wu Jen (Oriental Adventures and Complete Arcane). He has full progression, similar to a Wizard.

It would actually be quite easy to replicate what you want though. Just play a Wizard that ends up as a Wizard 12/Fighter 8. You have +14 BAB, and your HP's average out to just under a d8. Add in levels of Eldritch Knight, or something similar, to change those numbers around a bit.

I've seen variants where people simply give a bard a wizard's spellbook, and let him prepare instead of casting spontaneously. It seems pretty balanced to just allow that.

What we're going to try is letting a bard have the best of both worlds- prepare spells, then spontaneously cast anything prepared. Essentially, that bard's prepared spells would simply be his or her known spells for that day. Still wouldn't allow metamagic on the fly or anything.

So, Redmoon: what's the bard going to lose in exchange for that? No bardic music? Lowered skill points? It seems like allowing a bard to switch her spells around on a day to day basis is rather overpowering, if the only price is having to scribe spells and carry around a little spellbook.

Maybe Wizards just thinks that having Intelligence as a casting ability is just too powerful for anyone but archivists and wizards, since it gives skill points too.

With the right feat, any arcane class can become a preparation class.Arcane Preparation from Complete Arcane lets spontaneous classes prepare spells. It's a fix for the disadvantages of spontaneous spells, chiefly metamagic without the extended casting time, though you lose the whole spontaneous thing. This doesn't work if you're looking for a prepared caster for the range of spells, though.
