Any problems I'm missing in making the Healer a spontaneus caster? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been considering swapping the healer class to being a spontaneus caster rather than prepared, and was wondering if there might be unforseen consequences to that.

Currently, the character has a selection of spells that are pretty much useless unless you have a great deal of knowledge about what you'll be facing in a given day - you'll probably just always take the healing spells that you know will be useful. In fact, it seems like a cleric could make a better "general" healer because she can memorize various cure spells and spontaneously convert them into healing.

The Healer has a very limited spell set, so making casting spontaneous doesn't drastically alter the character.

Most of the spells will be cast to assist other party members, so there really shouldn't be any issues with overpowering the character.

Actually, I still don't think the Healer would be a very good normal character choice for a normal game, but its been an interesting option for an NPC healer type character to be along with the party.

Our group was lacking a straight cleric ... so the Druid took the leadership feat and got a healer ...

Our DM reserves the right to "create and maintain" all cohorts, however, so he created a Cleric 3 / Healer 3 .. with appropriate back story ... (I think he was at first worried about Healer being "too good")

In fact, add in a few good feats, and that healer is just awesome at the task!!

We've found it really handy as a cohort ... I'm not sure how'd it work as a primary PC, however ...
