Any suggestions for a fey-flavor sorcerer? [Archive] - Wizards Community

As opposed to the traditional draconic flavor, that is. Either something interesting to do with a 3.5 sorc or multiclass (yes, I've considered druid/sorc/geomancer but not too deeply yet) or an alternate version sorc or even another class entirely that would work better nut feels right would be fine.

The only published materials I have are the 3.0 books, the 3.5 SRD (of course), and Complete Divine, though I'm not entirely opposed to using things from other sources..friends have books too, after all.

And please, only suggestions that are properly balanced with Core...this will be used in a non-optimized serious campaign with mostly core characters and I don't want to screw up the dynamic. I'd like to avoid LA because we're probablty starting at level 1.

The simplest, core-only way should be enough, I think: focus heavily on enchantments. Which is not a bad choice for a sorcerer anyway, really. Your sorcerous Cha helps in situations where need to make those opposed Cha-checks to make folks do what you want, and can also let you achieve some of it without even using magic at all. Also, some enchantments are very versatile (since you can force people to do all sorts of different stuff), which is always good for the sorcerer with his limited spells known.

Season to taste with illusions (or perhaps even necromancies, if you're into the whole Unseelie court thing).

To customize it further, you can ask your DM to let you take some of spells from the druid list as your spells known, to better fit the D&D fey "nature and enchantment" theme.

What are characteristics of fey?

They fly
They are affected by cold iron, but not other stuff
They've got good will saves and half BAB
They're weak but have strong illusion and enchantment magic.

That's a pretty good theme to build a sorcerer around. You can do
attack, defense, movement just off the core theme. For the cold iron,
not much you can do except ask the DM for a unique spell or feat
(spell like stoneskin but DR=cold iron, or a feat that gave DR5/cold iron
perhaps)

You'll want a plan for constructs, high SR-things and stuff like undead
where mind-affecting works poorly (high SR...shadow magic is all SR=yes
even if what it duplicates isn't).

Maybe mix in some "nature" magic (glitterdust as a kind of faerie fire,
transmutation magic like enlarge person because spriggans do that, etc)
Look through the various books for unusual fey and swipe their abilities.
Reduce Person certainly seems possible.

But you can do a pretty good Fey themed sorcerer just from PHB sources.
Something like:

gnome sorcerer, heighten spell and maybe other metamagics (silent) or spell focus feats or maybe eschew materials. Invisibility +silent image is taken early, then dropped for improved invis and major image later. Likewise shadow conjuration is swapped for greater shadow conjuration later.

L0: prestidigitation, read magic, ghost sound, daze+whatever you like
L1: color spray, charm person, enlarge person, +whatever
L2: glitterdust, alter self, mirror image, tasha's laughter+whatever
L3: major image, suggestion, fly+whatever
L4: improved invis, polymorph, confusion+whatever
L5: shadow evocation, baleful polymorph, mirage arcane+whatever
L6: veil+whatever
L7: greater shadow conjuration+whatever
L8: otto's irresistable dance+whatever (mind blank?)

you get the idea.

We have draconic feats...

What I almost want to say is we need some fey feats. If you have access to the draconic feats I would try to pick ones that might fit, but figure out what types of fey you possibly could have come from. Using that fey idea, then run with it. If a feat gives you a skill and some energy protection then match it or come close to it with your fey background.

The night haunt feat (even though it gives you spell like abilities) might work if you want your blood background, or even spell hand.

Take a fey and try to have your character pick up some of it's personal traits? Or if they fey uses select colors or areas, wear items that match those areas. If the fey comes from a natural area, use those colors. I am sure you see where I am going with this...

Look at the fey you choose and pick up spells that mimic those natural spell like abilities. If your DM really wants to give you some abilities, then take a feat and possibly get an enhancement to your DC's verus fey in general?

I think I have added some select ideas, but honestly find feats if you want to go that path and just slightly atler the name but not the abilities.

This is the best I could come up with. :D

That's not only a good theme, that's practically a description of the sorcerer as such. :) (Apart from cold iron.)

I like the variant stoneskin idea.

Entangle! (If you can get your DM to allow you some Drd spells.) Or just take Evard's black tentacles and call them [your character's name]'s angry roots and describe them as a kind of entangle on steroids.

You should definately make your character chaotic. Personally I would go for an Elf over a Gnome. You might consider going for Arcane Heirophant. If you don't want to take any levels in druid though, you might be able to convince your DM to let you take some of the Druids lesser class abilities as feats. Like: Nature Sense and Resist Nature's Lure, it wouldn't really be unbalancing at all.

Enchanments and Illusions are definately key. I would stay away from big flashy destructive spells like fireball and lightning bolt, they aren't really in keeping with a fey concept, and unless you are going for an unseelie concept I would stay away from most necromancy spells as well.

You might want to choose a specific type of Fey to emulate, like a Dryad, Pixie, Sprite, etc.. that could give you some more focus on what to do with your character. For instance if your Fey Heritage is strongly connected to the water, then spells like Obsuring Mist and Water Breathing would make sense. You might even be able to convince your DM to let you take a few spells that aren't normally on the Sorcerer spell list if they fit your concept really well for instance if your concept was that you had Dryad blood, then (s)he might let you take Tree Stride and Tree Shape even though they are normally Druid/Ranger spells.

You could probably design a feat to grant you a specific extra list of spells that you had available to you because of your heritage.

I would definately go for Polymorph, but most Sorcerers take that anyway.

I'd say, come up with some substitute levels, with bonuses to charm spells, gains a few spells, like Eagle's Splender, Fly, and some thing else, at the cost of on 2 spells. I'll work on it a bit, and post it here.

Dragon put together a series of Heritage feats over a couple issues a while back, including Fey heritage.

What you need here is a Warlock, you get the basic concept of wielding arcane power as a piece of your heritage rather than study. you get DR/cold Iron (a fey's favoriate type of DR). There's even a note in the warlock backgrounds section, that some may draw power from "wild or fey forces". change a bit of flavor on some invocations and your there.

I would go with a Grey Elf Witch (from the DMG).

I always broke it down as:

Sorcerer: Some Draconic-blood.

Warlock: Some Fiendish-blood.

Witch: Some Fey-blood.

Dragon #329 has an article on "swarm familiars" for spellcasters. If you take the Improved Familiar feat, are chaotic neutral, and can wait until 16th level, you can have a shimmerling swarm as a familiar (from MM III). Nothing says fey like being surrounded by thousands of the glowing, little buggers...they'll flutter hither and thither at your command! :D

And if your DM allows, take the half-fey template from Fiend Folio. Granted, it's an LA +2, which always stinks for a spellcaster, but you get a sweet list of advantages (including natural flight and +4 to CHR).

If you want actually play a fey, but don't want to deal with a level adjustment, try to get a copy of Races of the Wild and take a look at the Killoren. If you don't mind a +1LA, your other best option is the Feytouched from the Fiend Folio - the charisma boost with help mitigate your loss of casting ability and you'll actually be a character with fey heritage.

Otherwise your best bet is to do as others have mentioned here; focus of enchantments and illusions, and take a look at the Witch variant spell list in the DMG.
