I was searching around and found a couple bounty hunter core classes that I liked a while back.... but unfortunately, it was during a storm, lost power, didn't get links :(

Anyone have a link to 1 or 3 or 10 of them that I can dig through?

I know some of you can direct me to the decent ones already made...

I searched the compendiums, didn't find any...

Or how about decent ranger variants that aren't so protect-nature styled?

Dear gods people... you'll respond to a multi-page, completely moronic concept like a "Battlemaster" (different thread, basically, the most completely idiotic class concept ever concieved by anyone above the age of 2.) but I can't get a few links to some already created and hopefully appreciated classes?

Bounty Hunter PrC? Core Class?

Someone HAS to have a link or 2 or 5 or 10 to the ones they've read that they found to be the best on the boards...

The bloodhound PrC from the Complete Adventurerer is exactly what you are looking for.

An unofficial D&D site is all I have, maybe you'll like the page I dig through it all the time. www.comunity3e.com use the search function for Bounty Hunter I'm sure I saw one there somewhere once.

Hey there. I have seen many a bounty hunter interpretation both as core classes and PrC's. By far the best is in the book Crime and Punishment. Its put out by Atlas games. Link:http://www.atlas-games.com/product_tables/AG3223.php
This book is excellent. Not only does it have a balanced and fun 20 level bounty hunter core class, its full of new material like the magehunter and spellbane PrC's, new rules for net use, including new enchantments and interpretation of old ones....does a flaming net do damage every round or what for instance, plus all kinds of new mundane gear and spells specifically geared toward law enforcement, info gathering, and espionage. It also has many discussions on medieval law systems and the way diff cultures and alignments deal with justice and the law...I dont mean to sound like an ad for this book but it really is amazingly well written and put together. All the material is very blanaced and playable. It also written by Keith Baker and won the award for the best d20 product of the year at gencon that year...if that tells ya anything.
I'll stop spouting off...just go get yer hands on the book...its more than worth the 20 bucks.

That sounds like a great book, and I think Keith Baker could write well about law enforcement and such; he does seem to handle mature issues and setting logic pretty well. I might have to pick that up, because I've been wanting to run a Bounty Hunter campaign for quite awhile.

That said, I don't see the need for a core class. There must be a dozen ways to make a great bounty hunter with various combinations of Rogue, Fighter and especially Ranger.

Look at the 3.5 Ranger. It's a good, solid class, with d8 hp, 6 skill points, full BAB and two good saves. The archery tree is generally a better choice than the TWF tree, but there are ways to make either work.

The Ranger is a tracker and hunter; a bounty hunter is just that- a bounty hunter. You get Track at 1st level. You get the skills to track bounties in the wild. The only thing you lack is the Charisma-based skills to take the hunt into the city. You can get those with a level or two in Rogue, or with a variant like the one in Unearthed Arcana, or with maybe a few feats.(Complete Adventurer maybe?)

Now, take a closer look at the Favored Enemy ability. In 3.0, it said that you could not take your own race as a Favored Enemy unless you were evil. Note that it does not say that in 3.5- I think they made the change specifically for the bounty-hunting ranger. Note also that the bonus applies not only to damage, but also to skills that are very useful in tracking bounties.

There are also the bounty-hunting PRC. Not only Bloodhound, but also Justicar, which is one of my favorites. They're good classes in their own right.

One last note is the idea of a bounty hunting team. Nobody can track you down like a Ranger, a Bard, and a specialist Diviner working together.

Yeah.... I know the ranger has all that it takes to do what's needed done in this regard... cept that in my head, it just doesn't feel right for what I'm wanting for this character.

Rangers are masters of the wild (or variantly urban ranger) but either way, they're animal and nature lovers... with a supernatural foot stuck in the divine/nature style of magical world...

A more of a rogue type mentality would fit the character better, but the class doesn't nearly fit as well.

And I'm not big on dipping into classes unless I can see it fitting the character, not just the concept.

What would suit well, is a nicely balanced ranger that casts arcane spells instead of divine... and doesn't have the nature/animal bend. But I haven't found one of those yet, either... hehe maybe I'll just make one and post it and see how people respond.

While I agree that the justicar or bloodhound are wonderful PrC's for the situation at hand, I was looking for a way to lead into them and synergize with both the concept of the character, and those type of PrC's as well... and a 1-2 level dip in ranger just suits the situation FAR too well to ignore... if it weren't so tree-hugging.

When you see how intelligently the Bounty Hunter core class is made you will understand why a whole new thing was needed beyond ranger.
Check it out, its great.

The Urban Ranger varient from the Unearthed Arcana might better suit your needs.

Try getting a hold of the Slayers d20 book. They have a Bounty Hunter as a core class. It's something of a combination between fighter, ranger, and rogue.
