| harmyn05-13-05, 07:23 PM | I am looking for more ideas, insperations, and thoughts for Fighter Variants. We were given a sampling of them from Dragon Issue 310 when they were going over the class updates for 3.5 and offering up ideas. They had ideas like Bodyguard, Pugilist, Targeteer, Shieldbearer, Kensai, and Exoticist. I am toying with using a setting where the "core/standard" fighter is replaced with a wide selection of variants to choose from. Probably going to do little twists like this to several classes if possible. Does anyone else have some other ideas of their own they would like to share? Any and all thoughts and ideas on this welcome. Thanks for your time. |

Any and all thoughts and ideas on this welcome. Thanks for your time. I have three I created out of the Pc game Buldar's Gate 2 Shadow (of something). BattleRager (called him berserker in game), Kensai, and Wizsrdslayer. First, the anti-magic one: Wizard-slayer This warrior has been specially trained by his sect to excel in hunting and attacking spell-casters of all kinds. . Wizard-Slayer Alignment: Any. Hit Die: d10. Class Skills The fighter's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (arcane), Ride (Dex), and Swim (Str). Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) x?4. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier. Table: The Fighter Level Base Attack Bonus Fort Save Ref Save Will Save Special 1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Bonus feat 2nd +2 +3 +0 +0 Water Off a Duck’s Back (1) 3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 4th +4 +4 +1 +1 Magic Interference, Water Off a Dack’s Buck (2) 5th +5 +4 +1 +1 6th +6/+1 +5 +2 +2 Bonus feat, Water Off a Dack’s Buck (3) 7th +7/+2 +5 +2 +2 8th +8/+3 +6 +2 +2 Water Off a Duck’s Buck (4) 9th +9/+4 +6 +3 +3 10th +10/+5 +7 +3 +3 Bonus feat, Water Off a Duck’s Buck (5) 11th +11/+6/+1 +7 +3 +3 12th +12/+7/+2 +8 +4 +4 Water Off a Duck’s Back (6) 13th +13/+8/+3 +8 +4 +4 14th +14/+9/+4 +9 +4 +4 Water Off a Duck’s Back (7) 15th +15/+10/+5 +9 +5 +5 16th +16/+11/+6/+1 +10 +5 +5 Water Off a Duck’s Buck (8) 17th +17/+12/+7/+2 +10 +5 +5 18th +18/+13/+8/+3 +11 +6 +6 Bonus feat, Water Off a Duck’s Back (9) 19th +19/+14/+9/+4 +11 +6 +6 20th +20/+15/+10/+5 +12 +6 +6 Water Off a Duck’s Back (10) Class Features All of the following are class features of the fighter. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Kensai is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with all armor (heavy, medium, and light) and shields (including tower shields). If a Wizard-Slayer uses any magical equipment besides magical weapons, potions, or armor he loses his abilities for 24 hours (except feats) Bonus Feats: At 1st level, a fighter gets a bonus combat-oriented feat in addition to the feat that any 1st-level character gets and the bonus feat granted to a human character. The fighter gains an additional bonus feat at 6th level and 10thlevel as well as 18th level. These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats. A fighter must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums. These bonus feats are in addition to the feat that a character of any class gets from advancing levels. A fighter is not limited to the list of fighter bonus feats when choosing these feats. A wizard-slayer counts asa fighter for prerequisites. Wizard-Slayer levels count as Fighter levels for prerequisites. Water Off a Duck’s Back (Su): At level 2, magic has lower the effects on a Wizard-Slayer. All variable effects are lowered by a number. At level 2 this number is 1. At level 4and every even level after this number is increased this number by 1. The spell cannot be lowered below 1 effect. Example: A CLW of caster level 3 cures on average= 7, and at level 6 your reducing variable is by 3, so you are cured only 4. At level 8 Wizard-Slayer hit by a Magic missile spell reduces each missile by 4 damage so each can only deal 1. Magic Interference (Su): At level 4, a Wizard-Slayer can interfere with magic by hitting an arcane caster. For each successful hit on an opponent, functions like 10% cumulative spell failure penalty is applied on round on targets next spell. This stacks with any ASF target might have if they are wearing armor while if arcane caster. If you hit target twice = 20% ASF on targets next arcane spell. ---- A new kensai version: Kensai This class is also known as the Sword Saint, and consists of a warrior who has been specially trained to be one with his sword. They are deadly and fast and trained to fight without encumbrance. Kensai Alignment: Any. Hit Die: d10. Class Skills The fighter's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha),Jump (Str), Listen (wis), Ride (Dex), Spot(wis) and Swim (Str). Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) x?4. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Kensai is proficient with all melee simple and martial weapons and shields (not tower shields). A Kensai loses all abilities (not feats) when wearing armor, magical bracers, or magical gauntlets for 24 hours Bonus Feats: The Kensai gains an additional bonus feat at 14th level and every two fighter levels thereafter (16th, 18th, and 20th). These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats. A fighter must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums. These bonus feats are in addition to the feat that a character of any class gets from advancing levels. A fighter is not limited to the list of fighter bonus feats when choosing these. Kensai levels count as a fighter for purposes of perquisites. Iron Shirt (Ex): Kensai gains a +2 Natural armor bonus to AC at level 1 +1 NA every 10 levels. Kai Smite (Su): At level 1, as a free action a Kensai may use this Kai ability once/4 levels per day (at least once). This ability 1 round and makes all the attacks in that round do maximum damage. Ranged Mishap (Ex): A Kensai who uses a ranged weapon upon level 4 loses all special abilities(not feats) for 24 hours. Weapon Superiority (Ex): A Kensai at level 3, gains a competence bonus equal to +1 to hit and +1 damage for every three levels with any melee weapon. Flurry of Strikes (Ex): When unarmored, a Kensai may swing with a flurry of strikes at the expense of accuracy. When doing so, she may make one extra attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a –2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. This penalty applies for 1 round, so it also affects attacks of opportunity the Kensai might make before her next action. A Kensai must use a full attack action to strike with a flurry of strikes. When a Kensai reaches 11th level, her flurry of strikes ability improves. In addition to the standard single extra attack she gets from flurry of strikes, she gets a second extra attack at her full base attack bonus ----- BattleRager This is a warrior who is in tune with his animalistic side and, during combat, can achieve an ecstatic state of mind that will enable him to fight longer, harder and more savagely than any human has a right to. Berserkers tend to be barbarian-like in nature, but not always. Sometimes it is a conscious choice that a warrior in training makes. Regardless, opponents on the battlefield will be unsettled with they see the savage and inhuman elements of the berserker's personality. BattleRager Alignment: Any. Hit Die: d10. Class Skills The BattleRager’s skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Ride (Dex), Spot (wis), Survival (Wis), and Swim (Str). Skill Points at 1st Level: (4 + Int modifier) x 4. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 4 + Int modifier. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A battlerager is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with all armor (heavy, medium, and light) and shields (including tower shields). Bonus Feats:. The fighter gains an additional bonus feat at 10 level and every two fighter levels thereafter (12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, and 20th). A battlerager counts as a fighter for prerequisites. Enraged (Ex): At level 1, a Battlerager can achieve an ecstatic state of mind that will enable him to fight longer, harder and more savagely than any human has a right. In this Enraged state, a battlerager has +3 to hit, +3 damage, and + 3 dodge bonus AC. They also have 5 + 5/2 levels in temporary hps. Temporary hps are lost first. Duration 3 rounds + Con + 1 /5 levels. A Battlerager can use this once/4 levels per day. The Battlerager at this time is immune to charm, hold, fear, level drain, maze, imprisonment, stun, and sleep. You can voluntarily end Enrage prematurely. After a Enraged State: Becomes exhausted after enraging. While he's exhausted , he receives -6 to str/Dex. This effectively gives him -3 hit/dam and penalty of 3 to AC. Duration of this state is 1 minute + 1 ever 5 rounds enraged. Unlike normal exhaustion, you don’t become fatigued after it is over. Reduced breathe (ex): At level 10, a Battlerager is no longer exhausted at the end of being enraged, instead they are fatigued. Duration of this state is 1 minute + 1 ever 5 rounds enraged. The penalties for fatigued are -2 Str, -2 Dex, no charge/run. Enraged with no issues (ex): At level 18, a Battlerager no longer is even fatigued after being enraged Other than adding skill points for battlerager, know (arcane)to Wizard-slayer, and special abilities to Kensai: they are basicallybased on fighter. |

Actually I had the exact same idea as you, and have been working on it for both fighters and monks, you can see two of my other projects along this line in my sig (War College Initiate, Battlesworn Paladin). Others I am toying with: The Generalist: does it all, brawls, grapples, knows a plethora of weapon techniques. The Specialist: Focuses on one weapon, akin to a full progression weapon master. The Finesse Fighter: Grace is the name of the game. All amongst a ton of other stuff I will post here soon:) |
