rippad 08-01-07, 08:34 PM	I just saw apocalypto, and i thought it would be fun to do a character about the same as the main person in the movie. So im asking for help with race, class and PrC to make a savage jungle hunter with a link to jaguars or other similar cats. so far i thought about catfolk or lycantrope for race, and hunter, scout, or druid for class. Ive also heard of a race thats practically a intelligent animal standing on two legs. but i dont recall what its called or if its in any book or from this forum.
Endarrion 08-01-07, 10:46 PM	Well, off the top of my head I'd go with a human animal lord (complete adv.), with ranger and/or barbarian as his starting class (basically depending on how you want to play him). And the race you're thinking of is probably awakened animals. It's in the SRD. It's a 5th level druid spell that gives "humanlike sentience" to trees or animals. Good movie, by the way. I haven't seen a Mel Gibson directed movie I haven't liked (and Braveheart just so happens to be my favorite movie of all time).
dknight100 08-01-07, 10:52 PM	Good movie, though Apocalypto sounds like an ice cream (in NZ, there is the "Paradiso" or used to be, so its my opinion that Apocalypto should be the ice cream to end all ice creams) Once again, i'd say that barbarian/animal lord (panther) sounds about right - ranger is kinda stuck being a ranged fighter or a twf from their class bonus feats, which i don't think really suit the main character. ::EDIT:: The scout class actually, i think is more suited than barbarian, their class abilities just scream "this time, pick me! I'm that dude!" Bonus damage for turns where they keep mobile, increased movement speed, lightly armored at best, and wilderness skills such as trackless step.

dknight100 08-01-07, 10:56 PM	I might even say just straight Scout. I mean, he didnt really have an animal bond with the panther. It was just trying to eat him, and he was managing to keep ahead of it... ::EDIT:: The scout is one of those classes that i would like to play, but in a normal campaign, wouldn't. Most of their power comes from their big movement, and skirmish, so if your campaign frequently features really tight environments, then its kind of like saying "okay, you can a wizard... but i frequently have zones in my campaign where you cannot cast a spell".
Endarrion 08-01-07, 10:59 PM	True, but I was going with what the OP suggested, which was a character with a link to jaguars or other cats. It would help add some definition to the character other than, "the guy from Apocalypto."
Rerecros 08-01-07, 11:11 PM	I also recently veiwed Apocalypto, it was well made, but man is Mel Gibson ever a racist. The massive historical inaccuracies aside, the whole thing is some subtle justification of the genocide and discrimination against the Mayan people, which continues to this day.

You don't know the guy. How about not making bold statements on things of which you are totally ignorant. Thanks. You can find evil intent wherever you look, but that doesn't mean it's actually there. Me, I saw the movie as an explanation of how the Mayans were really just the same people as those who invaded - they just had different tools. Some were just plain old folks, trying to protect their families and love each other the best they knew how. Some were evil bastards with nothing but selfish intent. If it had been the Mayans invading Spain, none of this would be different. Sometimes it's hard just to see people as people and not as aliens who are different from you, or worse than you because they don't think and act the same way. But please give it a try when it comes to people like Mel Gibson. If you don't, you're just one step away from being a racist yourself. Now, back on topic, the hard part is to try and make the main character from the movie under level 5. Because really, the more-skilled slaving party leader would probably have only been level 5, and our hero was just a pup by comparison. At least, until the end when he got some phat XP for all those slavers!! :)
Manyfist 08-02-07, 07:49 AM	Jaguar Paw was defiantly a Scout. He could run fast, and he had an advantage of moving through the terrain. He didn't really have any connection to the Jaguar just that after he fell into the quick sand and came out the other side he was covered in mud, and began to go on the offense instead of defense.
Rerecros 08-02-07, 02:15 PM	My problem was the way he protayed the spanish who were going to wipe them out as "coming in to save the day". He played up the negative aspects of their culture to make it seem like they were getting what was coming to them, that mayan's were already lost anyways, that they needed saving, excuses used during their extermination. Excuses used today when they want to do silly things like keep their own culture and language.
