Appropriate population of high level spellcasters? [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-20-05, 03:01 PM Hello everyone. Got a question that really cannot be answered by the rules per se nor am I sure where this would be appropriate to ask, so I'll pose it here in the classes section.

What does everyone think to be an appropriate percentile of a population to be capable of casting 9th level spells? Does 0.02% of the entire population sound right to you? Especially in a world where immortality through either necromantic or other magical means isn't all that uncommon? And remember, this is including all clerics, sorcerors and wizards, along with a few of the other random classes that have access to 9th level spells, in a city that boasts a population of close to 15 million beings.

07-20-05, 03:17 PM The Koga guesses it would depend on the means of casting level 9 spells..

Monsters take up about 0.90%.
Clerics and druids sense The Koga dislikes them, should take up only about 0.10%.
Wizards/Sorcerers perhaps a good 2%.
And miscleniouss 3%.

That's a total of 6% of the population. Which may not sound like much, but is somewhere in the vaccinity of fourteen hundred elite spellcasters..

I'd have thought 1 in a milliion would be closer really. Casters are rare in and of themselves and getting to 17th level takes an awful lot of doing. That's still one per large city and you get a lot more lower-level casters.
