arcane archer / imbue fireball? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi, sorry if this has been answered before but the search function isn't working for me...I just wanted to ask, if an arcane archer imbued an arrow with a fireball spell, and that arrow was fired and hit an opponent, would the opponent still get a save vs. the fireball damage? (considering that the arrow is sticking out of his chest, for example)

I get the feeling that game balance dictates that he should get a save...but logic dictates otherwise...

It's been said before... Logic has no place in a world with magic. If you can cast a spell into an arrow, fire at someone, and have the spell go off in the real world, then, and only then, can you use logic.
Edit: By the way, he does get the save.

If someone can get a Reflex saving throw while asleep, I'd be willing to believe they can get one in that situation. Especially when you get into cases like evasion and improved evasion, where a person can survive a fireball relatively unharmed despited being at ground zero.

For all we know, a successful saving throw means he was able to pull out the arrow and toss it away. Or he twisted his body so the arrow would not imbed itself in him, but nevertheless wounded him. As far as I know, there are no guidelines about what happens to arrows when they strike a person, other than the chance of being ruined.

I'm sorry, but I tend to see D&D combat rules as an abstraction. Worry about the logistics of how things actually happen later.

by the D&D guidelines he gets a save.

if you think this is'nt right talk about it with your DM and see what he thinks

remember the D&D books counts as guidelines you can alter them yourself.

good luck

Hello.

Why do you want to imbue the fireball into an arrow at all? I mean the fireball has a longer range than your bow without range increments (ok, perhaps not, depending on your caster level) and doens't need an attack roll. What if you miss? Then you've just wasted a level 3 spell.

I think the Imbue arrow ability is next to useless. There are so few low level spells you can use with this ability it is simply not funny. Sleep, burning hands and grease are the only ones I can remember off my head right now. Just my opinion on the topic.

actually it's not me who was asking this, a friend of mine came up with the idea. I think the point was to see if there was a way to maximize damage: take away his saving throw and you deal more damage. Plus with an arcane archer's abilities, maybe you could end up with a seeking / phasing imbued fireball arrow.

I personally think that following the spirit of the rules, there *should* be a save, but I'm unable to justify it.

farghal,
which guidelines would those be? could you point me to something concrete please?

thanks for all your replies, everyone :) keep 'em coming...

is it just me, or is the search function messed up for everyone? every time I try to search, it thinks I'm logged out and asks me to log in. I've been trying to dig up anything on this imbue fireball idea and haven't found anything else so far...

Search hasn't worked for a while. To increase saves, you could always use spell focus/greater SF, and increase your intelligence... Otherwise, I don't see what you could do.

by guidelines i mean the D&D "Rules" so i can't give you anything concrete about that ;)

but you use the range of the bow you shoot with and the rest is the same. but the spell is going off when the arrow hits something (floor door and creatures) so i think you should discuss this with your DM and see if you can do something with it. such as :

-no save
-a save but 1.5 times more damage
-etc.

good luck
