Arcane Archer: Seeker Arrow question [Archive] - Wizards Community

At 4th level, an arcane archer can launch an arrow once per day at a target known to her within range, and the arrow travels to the target, even around corners. Only an unavoidable obstacle or the limit of the arrow’s range prevents the arrow’s flight. This ability negates cover and concealment modifiers, but otherwise the attack is rolled normally. Using this ability is a standard action (and shooting the arrow is part of the action).

If I understand this correctly, the arrow can be fired at a target who has total cover or total concealment, and the arrow will ignore the cover or concealment. If the target is, for example, around a corner and down the corridor 100 feet (i.e., completely out of sight and with total cover), can the arcane archer can fire a seeker arrow at the target?

What does it take for a target to be considered to be "known"? Is a target known if you saw him run around the corner? Is he known if you met this person before, anywhere and any time prior but you don't see him at the moment? Or, would he only be known if you see him standing right in front of you?

#1

You have to pinpoint the target. (ie know what square he is in before firing)

For something with total concealment and cover, the usual way is a good listen check. But it can also be logic (he full attacked and then 5' stepped behind that wall) or other information (Fred who can see him says "he's 30' away from you, 10' up, at 2 0-clock), or your bat familiar hovering over his head in the "he's under me" maneuver you taught him or funky things like tremorsense or blindsense.

This approach is best if you have never actually seen the enemy.

You have to have seen the enemy at least once, and he has to be in range. (I use this one) Hearing his name or knowing about him won't do it.

Alternately you can look at the scrying modifiers and ask the DM how well you have to know him to get to use the arrow.

Actually, I'm the DM, and I'm not sure how this ability is supposed to work. ;)

I'm kind of leaning toward #2. But, I'm still not fully sure, yet.
