| arjomanes05-25-07, 11:28 AM | Besides the bard, are there any arcane casters who can cast cure spells? Variants are worth considering as well. Thanks. |
| Devil Gnasher05-25-07, 11:43 AM | It's not so much a class variant but a way of allowing arcanists to cast healing spells (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=830680). |
| Grogmir05-25-07, 11:50 AM | Only the Arcane Discilple feat from C.Divine. Lots of Pre-Req's though. Have to be first level (IIRC) needs high wisdom - can only cast each level once per day. and diety has to have the healing domain. BUT if you do all that then yes - you can cast some healing. Grogmir |
| arjomanes05-25-07, 11:57 AM | That's an interesting thread, but it looks more like a way for DM's to restructure the schools of magic. I was wondering if there was something a player could do that wouldn't be a really fundamental change. So far, I've come up with: 1. the bard with really slow spell progression. 2. the extra spell feat, which is also a really slow way to add cure spells. I thought maybe there was a class or variant published that I missed. The reason for my question: in the campaign I'm playing there are no clerics or paladins allowed (the gods have forsaken the world), so that leaves druids, bards and UMD users as the major healers. I was hoping there was some way to make an arcane character with access to healing spells, but it looks like there isn't anything by WotC available. |

| Arcane Guyver05-25-07, 11:59 AM | Apparently, in Complete Champion they have rules for allowing a Sorcerer to acquire a domain...meaning they could pick up the Healing domain, along with most of the Cure spells. |
| Devil Gnasher05-25-07, 12:03 PM | WotC restructured the schools of magic first. All healing spells including clerical and druidic spells were necromancy or necromantic, before 3rd edition. |
| igotsmeakabob!!05-25-07, 12:03 PM | Also there's the Silver Pyromancer prc from Five Nations, an Eberron sourcebook. It allows you to start casting paladin spells off of your sorc/wizard casting. |
| arjomanes05-25-07, 12:03 PM | Ooh I haven't looked at complete champion yet. Do you know if it's a variant sorceror class, or a feat? |
| Arcane Guyver05-25-07, 12:06 PM | Ooh I haven't looked at complete champion yet. Do you know if it's a variant sorceror class, or a feat? It's a substitution ability, which replaces a few spells known at 5th level (though, honestly, you could mess with it a bit so you could start with the domain). |
| UCsimplyme05-25-07, 12:13 PM | Rainbow Serpent PrC from Complete Divine and Master Specialist (Conjuration) PrC from Comlpete Mage are both routes to pick up healing spells as an arcane caster. |
| arjomanes05-25-07, 12:24 PM | Rainbow Serpent PrC from Complete Divine and Master Specialist (Conjuration) PrC from Comlpete Mage are both routes to pick up healing spells as an arcane caster. The Rainbow Servant PrC only adds Good, Air, and Law domains, and I can't see any healing spells from this PrC. Did I miss something? Master Specialist does let you add three spells to your spell list so that's something. I think the arcane disciple feat looks best for my purposes so far. Thanks. |
| igotsmeakabob!!05-25-07, 12:27 PM | Be careful, your DM will likely not allow you to take spells outside of the sorc/wiz list for your master specialist levels. |
| KoreKore05-25-07, 12:32 PM | AS an interesting side note technically a wizard can copy divin spells such as cure spells into his spellbook and cast them as arcane but good luck getting your DM to allow that. |
| Evicmar05-25-07, 01:27 PM | There is a feat or variant wizard that let's a wizard gain a clerics domain spells for one domain. If the wizard takes the healing domain he now has healing spells that are arcane. |
| The_Jhereg05-25-07, 02:40 PM | If you just want downtime (not combat) healing, and you're a high enough level, planar binding up some creatures with relevant healing abilities (angels/archons, etc) may be a good option for getting the spells. Otherwise, Arcane Disciple seems the best bet. |
| risner05-25-07, 11:35 PM | Besides the bard, are there any arcane casters who can cast cure spells? Variants are worth considering as well. Thanks. Witch DMG p175 2. the extra spell feat, which is also a really slow way to add cure spells. Master Specialist does let you add three spells to your spell list so that's something. Neither of these work. Neither allow you to add any spell not already on your spell list. Sorcerer/Wizards already have all spells on their class spell list. |
| JulesCARV05-25-07, 11:40 PM | Sublime chords? Well, I know that they're basically bards on steroids, and they only get cure spells up to 6th level picked from the bard list, but heck. |
| Magius_Rerecros05-25-07, 11:43 PM | Actually Risner, the feat does not state that it has to be from your class list, and I did not see it in Errata. Normally, I'd agree with you (being a DM) that it should be on your class list already, but using RAW, it does not have to be. Now, if I'm blind and didn't notice something, go ahead and prove me wrong, since it's late here right now and I'm not fully awake at this point in time. For something like this, I'd love to be proven wrong, because if one of my players catches wind of this, they'd abuse it like no tomorrow >_< |
| Ardent05-26-07, 01:09 AM | Anyspell can duplicate the effects of any arcane spell...including a Bard's cure spells. Little loophole a lot of people forget about. ;) |
| risner05-26-07, 11:17 AM | RAW, it does not have to be. 1) No errata needed, since the text is clear, so it is in the FAQ. 2) Wizard class list prohibits Wizards from casting spells not on their class list, so even if it did add the spell to their spells known (their spell book), they have no Cleric (or whatever) spell slots to prepare the spell. 3) All effects in the game that override class spell lists do (and must) have the required "from any spell list" tag. The same write used this in the earlier Expanded Knowledge (the Psionic version of the same feat), so he knew about this restriction and knew how to use it. There simply is no honest way to assert that using Extra Spell to snag any spell is not a defacto house rule. I don't mind you house ruling it that way, but please don't try to confuse the issue. Call it a house rule and be done with it. |
| blowfish05-26-07, 01:28 PM | Another option is the shugenja from Complete Divine. Wouldn't take much to adapt it to have a more western feel. They don't get their spells from gods, more like an urban druid with all their ties to the elements. |
| JulesCARV05-26-07, 02:05 PM | Shugenjas are divine spellcasters, though. |
| lord_xarallon05-26-07, 06:17 PM | Arcane healer: Classes Wyrm Wizard from Dragon Magic has gains Spell Research 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th level which let you add spells to your "arcane spell list". You can even add divine spells. With Sacred Exorcist you get turn undead, which lets you take the divine feat sacred healing. Then you have more healing. Other Divine feats can be usefull. Rainbow servant gives access to the cleric spell list. Feats/Skills Once you get healing spells, then you should get "Touch of Healing" With Augmented Healing, you get more healing from the spells. The domain feat, Healing Devotion from Complete Champion, appearently gives fast healing for 1 minute. Dragonic vigor Spontaneous healer Arcane disciple (already covered) The Heal skill (surprice) Spells Undying vigor of the Dragonlords Hoard life Any conjuration (healing) used together with augment healing There is the dragon pact with the gold dragon, Champion of the Golden Orb, gives you mass cure light wounds if you sacrafice a 7th or higher spell slot. There is probaly other ways to gain healing as an arcane caster. |
| Taliesin5205-26-07, 06:26 PM | Also there's the Silver Pyromancer prc from Five Nations, an Eberron sourcebook. It allows you to start casting paladin spells off of your sorc/wizard casting. As the kids are all saying these day, "Silver Pyromancer FTW." The last character I played was a Silver Pyromancer. The healing spells were nice but rarely needed when the Orb spells that were empowered, sudden empowered, and then smiting. I particularly liked the flavor of the crusader holier than thou type arcanist, particularly when I held a higher rank within the church than a cleric in our same party. |
| JapansRobo05-27-07, 05:13 AM | Sorcerers can learn unusual spells (spells not on their list) from scrolls when they level up. If a bard scribes a cure spell then the sorcerer can read the spell, and learn it when they level up. |
| Lawkeeper05-27-07, 08:41 AM | There was an old PrC in Dragon Mag' #280 : the Eldritch Master. One of its abilities was to enable your sorcerer (or any arcane spellcasting class for that matter, as there're no restrictions) to choose spells from other classes' spelllist. It specifically says that even if you select a divine spellcasting class' list, those spells stay arcane. So, if you select druid or cleric, or even bard, you could learn arcane cure X wounds.:) PS: however, note that was a long time ago, at the very beginning of 3.0 - your DM might disallow it. |
| risner05-27-07, 08:45 AM | Sorcerers can learn unusual spells (spells not on their list) from scrolls when they level up. If a bard scribes a cure spell then the sorcerer can read the spell, and learn it when they level up. The official stance on this is that each new spell must be associated with a feat or at DM discretion a quest. The "unusual spells" quote was originally put in to cover the sorcerer only feats that grant 9 new spells (one per level.) |
| dabrowns05-27-07, 08:50 PM | I seem to recall a post somewhere on these boards that listed a critter you could summon that could cast a cure spell. If that is true then Summon Monster X = arcane healing. Can anyone help my faltering memory? |

| Gadren05-27-07, 11:34 PM | Don't forget the Witch alternate sorcerer spell list in the DMG. |
| zzo3805-28-07, 12:11 AM | You could look at the Sage Wizard (http://zzo38computer.cjb.net/dnd/ImprovedUnearthedArcana/SageWizard.htm) variant. It is one way to do it... |
| deanruel05-28-07, 02:22 AM | Summoning a coautl to heal you in downtime would work. But I've got something better..... Go find a Naga. Spirit Naga I think, but don't quote me on it. A naga has the unusual ability to cast a number of divine spells but it counts as a Sorceror. Thusly if you got the Naga to Scribe Scroll you a few cure wound spells you could totally copy them into your spellbook and have them forever. So it's Find Naga-Scribe Scroll-Take Scroll-Copy Scroll-Cure! |
| Lawkeeper05-28-07, 05:05 AM | An additional solution : Complete Champion has an alternate class feature for sorcerers, allowing them to get a domain at 5th level (in exchange of one 1st and one 2nd level spell knowns). However, you can only cast each level's spell only once. Choosing Healing domain, this gives you all four basic cures, two cure mass, heal, heal mass and regenerate each once per day. The Magic of the Land feat, found in Races of the Wilds, allows you to heal 2 hp/spell level on each target of your spells when you cast them in natural settings. Any caster can select that feat, even arcane. It's a small healing, but that's on top of any other effects. |
| risner05-28-07, 09:49 AM | Thusly if you got the Naga to Scribe Scroll you a few cure wound spells you could totally copy them into your spellbook and have them forever. You could get the scroll. You could even copy them into your book based on PHB p179. But you could not prepare or cast them based on the Wizard class list write up in the PHB. In other words, this absolutely does not work. |
| runestar05-28-07, 09:53 AM | Isn't there a wyrm wizard prc or something in dragon magic which can learn a spell from any spell list? It sucks in that it only has 7/10 spellcasting advancement, but not bad if you want to learn arcane heals and the like.:) |
| risner05-28-07, 12:46 PM | Isn't there a wyrm wizard prc or something in dragon magic which can learn a spell from any spell list? It sucks in that it only has 7/10 spellcasting advancement, but not bad if you want to learn arcane heals and the like.:) Yes, and it uses the "From any class list" boiler plate language. All the abilites that allow a pick from "any" class list use this same language. Dragon Magic p55 |

It sucks in that it only has 7/10 spellcasting advancement, but not bad if you want to learn arcane heals and the like.:) I already mentioned that. I think it sucks too, but if you really need those spells, it is a fine way to do it. To get cure spells, there are other ways, more efficient ways. If you are going to be an arcane healer, sorcerer is probaly the most easy way to do it. Silverbrow Human Dragonblood Sorcerer to be specific. That will be my best quess. WIth Draconic Vigor and Augment Healing and casting Hoard Life at level 8 will only give you 6 nonlethal damage and you gain a gem which can heal you for 18 damage. That will be 48% of your HP total if you have a con of 14 or 15. Casting Cure Critical wounds upon youself will heal you to almost max HP. But if you gained it through Arcane Disciple, you will only have one Cure Critical wounds. |
