Arcane prepared spontaneous caster class? [Archive] - Wizards Community

OK, I have an idea for an arcane caster class that would combine most of the advantages of both the wizard and the sorcerer with only some of the disadvantages of them. But I am loking for ideas as to how best to tune it. I also don't want to step on anyone's toes incase they have come up with something similar. My idea is really pretty simple and it is possible that others have come up with it too.

Does anyone have any links to base classes that combine spell perparation and spontaneous casting of arcane spells?

Thanks in advance!

Hughman.

I don't get any sense of how you would balance this class, but one approach is to have a prestige class with high entry prerequisites: have you looked into the Magelord (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050202a&page=2)?

Well, anyway, that's one approach, but I'd be interested in hearing your approach too, if you want to share.

Spirit Shaman in Complete Divine prepares its spells at the beginning of the day, including metamagic versions thereof, but can cast them spontaneously as a sorceror can (though she cannot add metamagic feats on the fly).

I am currently working on a class like that myself, where you prepare your spells in the morning from a spellbook, and then cast them spontaneously as a sorcerer from a number of spell slots. The class I'm designing is a prestige class, and it's a bit tricky to balance so far (I'm not sure how many levels I want to make it, so far, hesitating between 10 and 14 levels).

Good luck with yours.

Magelord is a good option. But unless someone points out a race that gets evasion or a prestige class that grants evasion at first level, you can't get into it until level 12. At the earliest.

As for making an actual class, I really can't think of a way to build it. A sponteneous caster that gains Arcane Preparation for free seems like the best bet to me. Either That or a prepared spellcaster that gains a number of spell slots that can be cast sponteneously.

Perhaps a Wizard that gives up Scribe Scroll and his bonus feats for an additional spell slot each day that can be used sponteneously. (That might be good enough to force taking a prohibited school too.)

Look at any of Monte Cook's 3rd party work, most notably Arcana Unearthed (not to be confused with the Unearthed Arcana book WotC printed).

Actually spirit shaman is quite close to what I was thinking. might even have been an unconscious inspiration for it. I have the type up of what I was thinking almost done.. if only I could get the table to work /sigh

Thanks all!

That's a mistake I made. I still have Arcana Unearthed. I just never use it.

Spirit Shaman AKA: SHAMAN (as adding spirit to the beginning is redundant, like saying amazoness.) is pretty cool. An arcane variant that takes his power directly from the weave (or the equivalent) would be cool.

I decided to post my own take on a prepared spontaneous spellcaster:

Links are cool! (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626107)

Apparently, the universe was in desperate need of classes like this.

Cheers

That depends on whether you're willing to accept Divine Oracle's "prescient sense" as "evasion." If so, maybe you can enter it at 10th.
