bruiserdeck 10-05-06, 09:25 AM	I have built a psionic ranger alternate base class and am thinking about an arcane ranger. basicly its a ranger who gives up his pet and divine spells for arcane spells limited to 3 or 4 schools cast as a sorc but on the ranger spells per day list. (never able to cast AOE damage spells like fireball or bolt or anything.) does anything like that exist?

solbergb 11-03-06, 02:21 PM	Look at the arcane archer class. In many ways it IS the arcane ranger. You get familiar instead of animal companion, you get arcane spells instead of druid spells. Skill points are usually similar, because your int is higher than the ranger, but ranger gets 2 more skill points, and the skill list is very similar. If I was to build an arcane ranger class, I'd look hard at this build for an idea of how the abilities should play out. You'd want to mix up the ranger, wiz and arcane archer level abilities to make the spellcasting come out more like the ranger spellcasting, get the familiar at level 4 etc. But for balance you'd probably come out about right. Use intelligence as the spellcasting attribute and prepared casting. ranger3/wiz7/arcane archer10 (giving full BAB, ranger saves and arcane archer skill list/skill points the whole way, possibly adding spellcraft and kn arcane to the skill list to make up for loss of kn geography and search)
SCMrks 11-03-06, 08:28 PM	The Forgotten Realms book "Champions of Valor" has a feat called Sword of the Arcane Order that lets a ranger or paladin use their spell slots for arcane spells. The learn the spells from spellbooks like a wizard rather than like a sorcerer. The prereq is that they must follow one of the gods of magic but that can be modified by the DM to fit the campaign.
