i've got a "nice" problem with my campaign arcane spellcaster: my char must "solo" from 1st to 5+ XP-level (i mean stay _alive_ at low-lvl melee fights).

Can someone help me with creation of a wizard (or sorc) that can survive such "trial"?

(what i have: 16,14,13,13,12,7 for abilities, + i can go 2nd level char)

PS: sorry for my "bad" english

also: fighter/mage multiclass is weak or not?

Are variants allowed? If so, I've got two words for you: battle sorcerer, found in Unearthed Arcana. A bard would work too, but you only listed wizard/sorcerer....

nope - no variants.
Yes - battl.sorc is nice. But "this one" must be from PHB core class.
only "variants" - multiclassing =(

Going solo with a sorcerer or wizard is a challenge, but it's certainly not impossible.

I'd say that due to the "must always be ready" aspect of soloing, a sorcerer with eschew materials might be a better choice for this task. If you lose your spellbook, what are you to do then? Rely on Spell Mastery?

With sorcerers, you now have 2 typical variants that are good for soloing:

* the melee build

* the summoner

The melee build focuses on short-term buffs and self-targeting spells. Take spells that give you a quick bonus over long-term spells (like shield over mage armor). Spells like shocking grasp, burning hands, alter self, mirror image, blur, false life, vampiric touch, and heroism are all good here.

The summoner focuses on trying to let something else do their dirty work. Get out of combat and hurl summon spells at the enemies. Take Augment Summoning ASAP. Invisibility is very strong with this build.

If possible take Improved Familiar or Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) to have an additional companion/meatshield later on.

great! Wild Cohort is perfect.

I think summoner is not very good at med->high levels.
"melee build" should be nice with Thenser's Transformation at med->high level. But will such char be a good in party too (there is a pala, cleric and bard in party)?

I think about "control - damage" caster:

i mean a combo of "control" and "direct damage" spells - so i can knock some opponents out of fight and then just kill them (for example with color spray/magic missile or burning hands at 1-2 levels and web/scorching ray at 3-4 levels). What do U think about such caster subtype?

should i choose sorc or wizard? I think that wizard should be better choice because of its bonus feats. Dont like sorc much.
