I was over on the CO boards a while back, and someone said I couldn't take some archer classes (deepwood sniper, cragtop archer, peerless archer, etc) because I was using a crossbow instead of a short/long bow.

I'm pretty swure this was his oppinion, but jsut thought I'd check, is there any restriction like this, seeing as it isn't in the requirements for the PrCs?

I don't know about the other two, I've never heard of them before, but the Deepwood Sniper can use either. In the requirements it says "Feats - Weapons Focus (crossbow or bow).. blah blah more feats"

I doubt the other two would require a bow either, but I think some might.

Most of those PRC's require Weapon Focus in a ranged weapon of one type or another. Some require long or short bows specifically, while others accept just about any ranged weapon. It's really a case-by-case sort of thing. Just remember, though, that unless it states otherwise, any ranged weapon will do.

In the case of Peerless Archer, the requirements merely include proficiency in a type of true bow (longbow, shortbow, etc), and most of the early level abilities would apply to any ranged weapon, but some of them (the 8th level Threaten ability, specifically) specify they function when wielding a bow rather than merely a ranged weapon.

D&D terminology differentiates between a bow and crossbow.
