| Mazarick10-27-03, 03:44 AM | Evening, all Just a quick question. My girlfriend had a dream where her character was an archer (already is...custom core ranger...no spellcasting) who drew power from the moon. She suffered no ill effects in daylight, but she was definitely more powerful under the moon. She went out into a clearing and prayed to the moon. Her arrows kind of shimmered, and at times she would too. She's only level 2, as are the other players in my campaign...so changing core class abilities gained later on are basically no big deal. We also did some stuff setting up characters, so we're going to revise them next session...so changing the class entirely is no big deal, either (if roleplaying is involved, and we're not far along, I'm down). Basically, my question is should I make a core class, prestige class, or feats for this? In all honesty, it could just be said that she prefers moonlight, without really conferring bonuses, and that she worships the moon. Pretty easy to RP, in that case. Any help at all would be great. |
| Gingerbread Guy10-27-03, 03:58 AM | Hiho, Well, there are two ways of looking at Prestige Classes. The original idea for the PrC was that it represented an organization of sorts that a lucky player could join. The truely lucky and qualified members could adopt a special class that confered different, but not unusually powerful benefits. Nowadays the whole idea has gotten totally out of hand, and there are PrCs all over the place that you'd be insane not to take. Some of the Archer PrCs are the worst. Most of them are essentially "The Really Good Archer" but with a neat name. However, in this case, I condone the creation of a new PrC. For one thing, it doesn't sound overly powerful by nature. For another, its a nice idea, and it just sounds neat. lol Beware that you make this PrC REALLY fair, as you'll be under additional scrutiny from your players on acount of this being a special PrC for your girlfriend. Okay, in terms of how the class works, I suggest having it involve some deity or creature that is related to the moon. If there is a God/dess or Demi-God/dess involved with the moon, perhaps they could appear before the character and bestow upon her some related powers - giving her a divine feel, since she does indeed worship the Moon. Whatever you decide, I highly suggest there being a good reason why she's getting related powers. As far as these powers go, I suggest.. Low Light Vision under moonlight Darkvision under full moonlight [three days a month] Bonuses to hit based on the phase of the moon Increased range with ranged weapons under moonlight Perhaps a total lack/loss of class abilities under a new moon [three days a month], representing a distance from her patron. ~Ginger |
| Mazarick10-27-03, 04:17 AM | Very, very interesting. Thank you. And believe me, I'm well aware of the scrutiny from her being my girlfriend ;) Also, for some extended information, she is a wood elf. We are playing in the Forgotten Realms, and she is from the High Forest. Her character is supposed to be stealthy, keeps to herself, and is very in touch with the woods. The ranger class we have established has no spellcasting. In its place are 2 extra feats, some healing skills and d10 hd. Also, the animal companion is Ranger level = druid level -3 instead of Ranger level/2 = Druid level. Instead of Evasion is Uncanny Dodge (not flatfooted). +10' speed and at some high level she can not only pass through woods without movement hindrance, she can help others equal to her ranger level / 2 or something. (Can't remember...don't have notes out) If I was going to change the core class we have made, I would change favored enemy and allow some moonlight based powers listed above. Or maybe still allow 2 favored enemies and some moonlight powers later. Feats would involve something like Moonlight Combat or something. I'm really not sure. Your ideas for a prestige class are very interesting, thank you. Any other input is of course welcome! |
| Sacred Mesa10-27-03, 11:06 AM | hmmm-... interesting... i think i can be usefull with one or two ideas... :) i hope at least moon light archer seems cool... specially for a drow. a wood elven would gain drow like abilities during the class advancement. 1. Light sensitive 2. Dark Vision 3. Spell Resistance 4. Spell Like Abilities i suggest to look at lycantropes too, because their relation with moon fases. i suggest something like caracteristics increases or skill bonus during certain moon fases. 1. str, dex, con increase 2. Scent, Far sight or acute ear 3. even Speak with animals. third and very important, you should put some restriction to this class for example drows are day light blind and lycontropes are crazy in full moon. my propose this class loses its abilities during day and they abilities change during moon fases. another suggestion if u let Ranger spell cast u would have a lot of range to move around with this class |
| Gingerbread Guy10-27-03, 06:40 PM | Hiho, I don't think many Drow would worship a lunar deity.. I mean, they're from the Underdark where they can't even see the moon and only scarcely know of it's existance. I suppose a surface-borne Drow might have an incling to, but otherwise.. ~Ginger |
| Mazarick10-28-03, 03:16 AM | I agree. I'm not exactly fond of the whole addiction to good drow anyways... In any case, thanks for the input guys. Keep it coming! |
