Using dark knowledge requires a Knowledge check of a type appropriate to the creature faced. A Knowledge (arcana) check reveals secrets of magical beasts, Knowledge (dungeoneering) pertains to aberrations, Knowledge (religion) covers undead, and Knowledge (the planes) applies to outsiders and elementals. The DC of the check is 15. Most of the archivist's dark knowledge abilities increase in effectiveness if he succeeds on his Knowledge check by 10 or more. Dark knowledge can only be used once against any given creature.

Every dark knowledge states "If the archivist succeeds on his Knowledge check by 10 or more, this bonus increases to +X. If the archivist succeeds on his Knowledge check by 20 or more, this bonus increases to +Y." so does that me this if i beat the check by 30 I get the same as beating it by 20 or should it keep going in the preset progression?

No, you only get the same result as with +20.

However, you could look at this thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=836419), where there're additional options for archivists, designed by Pazu.

Including this feat :
Depth of Knowledge [General]
Your understanding of your foes is remarkable indeed.
Prerequisites: Dark knowledge ability, Knowledge (arcana, dungeoneering, religion, or the planes) 12 ranks.
Benefits: For every 10 that you exceed the DC of your dark knowledge check, your bonuses increase by +1 or +1d6, as applicable.
Normal: The maximum bonus from a dark knowledge check is +3 or +3d6 (DC+20 effect).
