Archivist-like Ranger Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-15-06, 03:37 PM One of my players has a really interesting character concept...but I'm not sure how to go about making it happen.

The concept is that of, essentially, a great explorer with a varied education.

We're looking at Ranger as the base, but the Favored Enemy isn't really appropriate. Nor is the late and low spell progression.

I offered up the Mystic Ranger from Dragon magazine and that fits quite well.

Taking the Education feat to add Knowledge as class skills works as well.

However, we were considering whether some version of the Archivist's Dark Knowledge ability might not be a better fit, instead of the Favored Enemy.

I'm concerned that the breadth of Dark Knowledge might exceed FE in potency and regularity of usefullness.

What I had proposed was to get trade FE for DK (exactly as the Archivist progresses), but to drop hit die to a d8 and use the mid-ranger BAB progression (like Cleric/Rogue/etc)

Do you guys think that's a fair way to balance it out?

Am I taking it too far or not far enough?

Multiclassing seemed a poor choice, as the character should be primarily a Ranger...but I dunno.

And whats the number of that dragon issue. Cause I wants it.
