hey there :D
sorry, if something similar has been asked before, just refere to the other thred
(yes, we used the search button ;) )

according to DMG (pg. 178-179): The Archmage could abandon a 5th lvl spell slot to cast a spell as a spell like ability twice per/day.
We're wondering if you could sacrifice a 5th lvl spell slot and get a 5+lvl spell as a spell like ability.

Should that be true:
Would i be able to use this ability twice per/day for that particular spell ( even if its eg.: a lvl 9th spell ) ?
Does this use of my "new" spell like ability count against my spells/day?

Many thanks

Yes, you could use one of your ninth level spell slots to gain use of a ninth level spell as a spell-like ability twice per day. This would count as one of your spells per day.

Well it's a prestige class ability. They tend to not have many disadvantages compared to advantages.

i don't have my books at hand, but i think that would be about 12 lvl 9 spells or more ( considering the bonus spells etc) ... that would be a bit overpowered ... at least i think it would be :)

The point of this is quite simple

lets take this example
-5th level Spell Slot
-Slot it would take up to cast a Maximized Fireball

You loose two spell slots and gain the spell like ability as a permanat spell the two main advantages of this are
A) You can now cast a 9th(or 8th,7th,6th) Spell at the cost of giving up a lower spell slot(5th) and it's normal spell slot(w/e)
and
B)The Advatages Spell-like abilites have towards Spells

There is no disadvantage besides slightly less versitility =P

You give up 2 slots to be able to use a SLA 2/day(or more, depending on which option you choose).

That's the tradeoff. Power at the expense of versatility. You have less slots to prepare your spells, which means a smaller variety of spells available to you at any 1 time. :)
