I have a question about one of the special powers. The spell-like ability power lists that spells with expensive components would cost the caster 10* the cost in xp.

I was originally thinking this meant that each usage used that much and that would be exceedingly expensive, now I'm thinking that it's a one time cost. Please verify.

I don't see anything that states that you can't lose a level by selecting a specific spell, could you choose wish and drop 3-4 levels but still have the use of that 2 times per day?

I don't think it's a one-time cost. It's made to be expensive for spells with XP cost, like Wish, or expensive material components, like stoneskin.

But that means that if a spell has a component worth 100 GP, then you burn 1000 xp for each usage of that. A single casting of a simbul's spell matrix would set you back 5000 xp (doesn't seem appropriate), now a 5000 xp one time cost so you can use it twice per day without needing the component makes more sense (if you take it that each xp is worth approximately 12.5 GP, you would need to cast it 125 times to equal out the expenditure)

Well, yeah, I suppose it was made that way to prevent abuses. You can cast Spell Matrix okay, but if you want to have it as a spell-like the cost is rather prohibitive. It makes more sense for frequently used spells without costly components, i.e. a nuke or a frequently used crowd control like Evard's Black Tentacles.

I have a semi-related question about the Arch Mage...

Doesn't the Heriophant (sp) get pretty much all of the same abilities, but doesn't lose spells, I still don't understand why Divine Magic is so much "easier" to use for a character than arcane. But oh well
