I took a look at the class article on the Grey Guard, and it praised the fact that it had class skills relevant to it's role as a strength... are the classes really getting so bad that this is a 'stregth' rather than 'logical design'!?

Compared to a fighter that cant Tumble, Spot or Listen...yes it is a strength to have applicable skills.

Those articles are constructed by rote. Honestly,Good BAB: A gray guard's base attack bonus advances as that of a fighter.
is not helpful. Nor is Good Attack Bonus: A knight's base attack bonus is +1 per knight level, which is the best in the game. Knights can dish out damage as well as they can take it.orGood Will Saves: A spellwarp sniper uses the best progression for Will saving throws (Table 3-1 in the Player's Handbook). Their arcane spellcasting levels boost this further, making them particularly good at resisting mind-affecting effects. The articles may be well-intended, but they're essentially worthless, since the bottom half of the article can usually be extrapolated directly from the top half by an experienced player, and an inexperienced player will only have a vague idea of what that means.

Oh, Grey Guard, you're so lousy. You give up the progression of several paladin abilities for a more lenient code, as if a normal paladin with no code at all would be such an amazingly powerful character. (Watch out! He can Smite Evil, like, three times per day, but he doesn't need to find a loo to pee! He can do it behind a bush like anyone else! Oh, no, it breaks the game!)

Well, an optimized Grey Guard can kill many evil creatures with one touch, no save. Once a day sure. But useful nonetheless.
