| crimsonwolf02-06-07, 12:46 PM | lets put it this way... a level 4 wolf... vs a basic ape..... one having a gnome riding on .. the other one having a baby like carryer on the back of the ape...wolf attacks for 1d6ish i think by that point and can possibly trip plue the gnome has to make riding checks and spells/mace attacking... ape gets two...1d8+3 damage with fists has alot higher ac bonus..not as fast as the wolf...but putting buff spells on yourself and the ape you have pretty much a brute fighter without feats plus if trees around get in teh baby carrir ape climbs up tree..crossbow attacks down at eniemes... |
| Chimaera200002-07-07, 12:45 PM | I typically find the difference to be worth it. If nothing else, the higher-level companion choices tend to be stronger, and have more attacks. While the animal companion's special abilities are all right, I'd rather have a tiger than that can pounce, rake, and use Improved Grab over a riding dog with more special abilities. |

Their defence is generally better and they have more special abilities and traits to use outside of combat. A very important factor to consider is size and the type of areas you will be in. If your party is in towns, cities, taverns and the like quite regularly then choosing a regular dog is a very good choice. As those bonuses and abilities stack up the dog ends up pretty strong and it can stay right by your side just about anywhere, size wise and social acceptability-wise. |
