| lengquistmagnus12-07-07, 11:18 AM | I thought of a mystic theurge with armor and wondered wich build is best for that purpose. I have looked at a build but wonder if you know any better. Also want to know what feats I should have. Classes: Cleric 3 / Warmage 4 / mystic theurge X. Feats: Combatcasting; so you can use medium armor. Augment Healing; Better healing couse I'm the primary healer in our group. *And some more* Race: Thougt of Assimar couse of the wis and cha modifier, but got levelmodefier so I'm not sure. The bad thing about warmage is that he is specilized at casting damage spells. He is unable of castning other spells like a wizard. But a Wizard (what I know) can't in anyway cast spells in armor without the arcane spell failure penalty. |
| 1 ton ghost12-07-07, 12:13 PM | you thinking is sound and you have a compelling model, though i would stay clear of Warmage given your Theurge predilection. you can get pigeonholed this way. unless you're looking at a "blaster", some of your divine will enable that function just as well. curious, what are you domains/deity? i prefer Wiz given the versatility of their spells and when coupled w/ the divine aspect w/out conflicting moral/alignment issues of another party caster, you have extreme amounts of power and clout in game. that is to say, even if you're weak, you have both spheres of influence covered (divine/arcane), as such, no one is going to let you die. that, coupled w/ mixing the 2 magics, you can do amazing things w/ only 1 vessel, you. -Assimar is a smart bet (for original motif), though i would stress Lesser Assimar (Player's Guide to Faerun) given the LA and the multiclassing issue of Theurge. long story short, full powers and everything, but you are typed as Humanoid & Outsider so you have to be a bit more mindful of certain planar FX/spells/etc., but there's no LA. -i'd recommend Lesser Tiefling (exact as above) and go Wiz/Cleric for the Int bonus. extra Int, Darkness (Sp) can be nice (free slot anyway), etc. Air Genasi is also quite good for magi too. try and off the LA no matter what. -your armor concern, yeah, that does suck. my bro's elf Wiz just got a mithral chain shirt w/ Twilight (-10% spell fail) on it and occaisionally straps a darkwood buckler, though i believe a mithral buckler has no ASP, so you know that's next. failing that, Imp. Mage Armor, Shield, and using cover are your best bets, occaisionally employing something that grants concealment. failing that, Invisibility, any mag.itm that ups AC your feats look ok, i guess. courteous of you to consider your party w/ Augment Healing, but don't let them lump you into "healer mode". at higher lvls, you will be running the show, not them. i'm partial to Sudden Maximize (CompArcane), especially w/ a Vampiric Touch (nice way to recoup your losses and screw enemy). any of the Reserve Feats (CompMage) help to make a Wiz more like a Warmage, very nice. Precise Shot if you're doing alot of rays, consider True Strike (or wand thereof) given BAB issues of multiclassing, etc. my bro is partial to Empower Spell, Scorching Ray specifically, heavy dmg. not sure what's right for you and your group. hoped this helped. |
| Qube12-07-07, 12:50 PM | I thought of a mystic theurge with armora d4 classer with armor ... why would you want that; armor enables you to get in close-n-dirty ; d4 makes you allergic to mud ... |
| RobbyPants12-07-07, 01:21 PM | you thinking is sound and you have a compelling model, though i would stay clear of Warmage given your Theurge predilection. you can get pigeonholed this way. unless you're looking at a "blaster", some of your divine will enable that function just as well. I agree. The warmage might not be a good idea for the build, unless you solely want to focus on blasting. i prefer Wiz given the versatility of their spells and when coupled w/ the divine aspect w/out conflicting moral/alignment issues of another party caster, you have extreme amounts of power and clout in game. that is to say, even if you're weak, you have both spheres of influence covered (divine/arcane), as such, no one is going to let you die. that, coupled w/ mixing the 2 magics, you can do amazing things w/ only 1 vessel, you. I would suggest wizard too. If you're looking for Int sysnergy (so you only need one casting stat), consider playing an archivist (Heroes of Horror) instead of a cleric. They cast based on Int instead of Wis. Plus they have a very wide selection of spells. A wizard/archivist mystic theruge can learn about every spell in the game. If your DM allows the LA buyoff variant, the aasimar isn't a bad way to go. At 3rd level (ECL 4), you can pay 3,000 XP to buy off your LA, making you a regular 3rd level character. From that point on, you will earn XP faster than the rest of the players, because lower levels get more XP from the table. You will actually catch up within several levels, and the LA will be completely gone. -your armor concern, yeah, that does suck. my bro's elf Wiz just got a mithral chain shirt w/ Twilight (-10% spell fail) on it and occaisionally straps a darkwood buckler, though i believe a mithral buckler has no ASP, so you know that's next. True and True. Twilight is great with mithril for getting rid of ASF. Also, a mithril buckler has no ASF. Thus, a +1 Twilight Mithirl Shirt and a +1 mithril buckler will grant you a total of +7 AC (5 armor and 2 shield) for a mere 7,115 gold. |
| Talcon12-07-07, 01:29 PM | Battle caster and Mithral plate is great with that combo. with a clw wand costing 750, augment caster lose it appeal. practiced caster is good to boost your warmage caster level up. |
| IdleAltruism12-07-07, 01:41 PM | I thought of a mystic theurge with armor and wondered wich build is best for that purpose. I have looked at a build but wonder if you know any better. Also want to know what feats I should have. Consider the Psychic Theurge. Found here http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040925b Psionics don't suffer arcane spell failure. That would allow you to wear heavy armor. Classes: Cleric 3 / Warmage 4 / mystic theurge X. I wouldn't recommend using a spontaneous caster, you lose a overall CL. These kinds of builds suffer a serious blow early game and losing 1 CL on both sides hurts. Feats: Combatcasting; so you can use medium armor. Augment Healing; Better healing couse I'm the primary healer in our group. *And some more* Never take combat casting unless its a prerequisite feat for something much better. Its a trick! Take skill focus(Concentration) if you need the boost. Combat casting only helps you in one situation, Skill focus will aid you while casting defensively, getting hit while casting, riding while casting, and several other special conditions that require a con check or loose a spell. You gain all that instead of a +1 extra on combat casting checks. I also recommend practiced spellcasting(or manifester), the up CLs do help. Race: Thougt of Assimar couse of the wis and cha modifier, but got levelmodefier so I'm not sure. Again loosing another CL would hurt badly, especially with a spontaneous class. Someone already mentioned the lesser planetouched, I personally don't allow them in my own games, but if your DM does go for it. The bad thing about warmage is that he is specilized at casting damage spells. He is unable of castning other spells like a wizard. But a Wizard (what I know) can't in anyway cast spells in armor without the arcane spell failure penalty. Specializing in damage spells isn't necessarily a bad thing. Its not quite optimal, but it does make a great artillery character. I doubt it fits with your concept though. | Lord_Zeb12-08-07, 12:42 AM | Warmage 4/Cleric 3/Mystic Theurge, in Medium (Mithral Full Plate) armor & Light shield, and a Healer... Your blasting skills will be fairly weak, and so will your Cleric spells... At 10th level you will have spell power of a 7th level Warmage and a 6th level Cleric (and an average hp of 3,5/level). Recommend Practiced Spellcaster feat x 2. And some Divine feats, like Sacred Healing, to make use of that high Charisma that you will sport more useful, using up Turning attempts, as your Healing skills are a bit weakened as well. You will have loads of spells though... And you can gain access to all Wizard scrolls and Wands by taking Magic Domain as Cleric, that will also boost your Warmage scroll ability with half Cleric level (not much, but something, and the Identify spell at 2nd level that do not cost 100 gold to cast make it worth it regardless). Maybe getting a magical Caster's Shield can be a good idea? (Only cost 3153 gp+scroll value.) But in the end, I think it might work out well, as long as you try to keep out of melee. Think you can become a decent blaster, and a good healer on top of that, as well as get the protection from the armor you wish for (so you can dump Dexterity a bit, only need 12), and work fairly well in the group. Warmage will grant you a multitude of long and shortrange artillery spells, spontaneously cast from a considerable list. And the Cleric powers will make up for the lack of flexibility the Warmage has, giving you access to utility spells, and at the same time allow you to spontaneously cast Healing spells so you can fill the Cleric slots with whatever you think might be useful and still use them for what truly is useful.;) |
