I hear of this class time and time again yet I cannot find the book that has it and I've read a lot of them. Can someone help me out here?

dha, well that explains it...I only use homebrew settings.

Not worthing buying the whole book just for that then?

Probably not. Its a cool class though, and I love everything about Eberron. I'm not sure I'd recommend it if you were never planning on using Eberron, but the book could give you plenty of ideas for your campaign I suppose. There's a number of feats and spells that could easily be put into any campaign setting, and you could probably find a place for the Warforged, Kalashtar, Shifter, and Changeling races in a homebrew setting... but again, it might not be worth it.

The Artificer was presented in a Dragon magazine, a while ago, part of a promotion of Eberron, along with the Eberron races. Maybe you can find the issue, that would be cheaper than a heavy hardcover book.

There is also an Artificer prestige class in Forgotten Realms, by the way.
