Um... it's incredibly easy to make an Artificer into a melee monster that makes CoDzilla look like a Fighter. Hint: Persistent Spell. Extraordinary Spell Aim.

He doesn't need 30 levels. He needs about 7, at which point he's a demigod the rest of the time.

For 1-6, he's still useful as he can use Weapon Augmentation to get Bane: Whatever they're fighting, or Flame/Caustic Surge (better than Flaming), or similar. Also Armor Enhancement: Greater Healing means he heals better than the Cleric, Skill Enhancement covers the skills lacking...

Oh and ranged? Don't bother with archery, not enough damage. Javelins work, assuming your superior mobility can't just get you into melee range. 150 foot range there without anything helping it. Course you take penalties at the higher ranges, but these are no problem.

Before 7, crossbows work, with the aforementioned Bane or whatever.

Artificer can do anything better than anyone.

You know the phrase "anything you can do the artificer can do better"? It still applies. Though not as much. If you want to just make your weapon just take a craft skill, if you want to make it magical the OA samurai or Ancestral Relic (BoED) or the Kensai do that, or any spell caster. I'm sure I'm missing something. And you won't be able to be good at both. You can either be decent at both or great at one and okay at the other. And that typically works at lower levels and not higher levels.

Oh yeah, and if you want more detail check the last quote in my ego sig and check the thread it links to. That's how I got it. :P

For archery, a Wand of Scorching Ray+Metamagic blows the competition out of the water. For Melee, Persistent Spell and Metamagic Spell Trigger/Completion are the way to go.

Though not as much. If you want to just make your weapon just take a craft skill OR, you could NOT take the craft skill, boost your skill with infusions, and take 10 and make the masterwork DC anyways. Because you want to use your skill points on something useful, and moreover, my way means you can make *any* type of craft DC, no matter what type of item you want to make.

True, the artificer owns the show at crafting, I was just showing that you needn't be one to craft things.
