| WarriorElf24010-31-03, 02:59 PM | Well, I am making a new character, and perhaps this thread belongs in another forum, sorry WizO's. Anyway, I definately want her to be an elf, and one of the following classes: Druid Paladin Sorccerer But, I cant decide. Lame, i kno. However, I need her to be skilled in swordplay, (i think all of those classes can do so, since she is an elf) and thats about it. I think druids are too earthy, paladins too religious and sorccerer's not skilled with weapons, would she make a better ranger? Please offer your advice, and your opinion. Please dont hurt me :D I sound like a n00b and perhaps I am, but maybe I am. HELP!!! lol  |
| gnimish10-31-03, 03:05 PM | A little more information: What kind of swordplay? two-hander? rapier? shortsword? Are you heading more towards an "outdoorsy" type? How much do you want to focus on spells? You list paladin - are you thinking of playing an honorable, law-abiding super-good type elf? |
| WarriorElf24010-31-03, 03:21 PM | Sword Play: Longsword, short sword I suppose Outdoorsie is a must, animal and battle Chaotic good alignment Not so much on spells Is that good info or do u need more? |
| Talcoram Cyndar10-31-03, 03:37 PM | You pretty much just described a Ranger. With a Chaotic Good alignment, Paladin is right out. A ranger if fairly good as a warrior/swordsman, outdoorsey, limited spell selection and gains an animal companion. Play a ranger... -TC |
| gnimish10-31-03, 03:51 PM | That sounds an awful lot like a ranger to me. Barbarian is another valid choice, if a little offbeat. (and a little tough for an elf to have the good CON score). Druid could work, you might need to lean more towards neutral good or chaotic neutral (to meet the alignment requirement for Druids). A multiclass could work here also, but not as well. Overall, I would say ranger or barbarian are your two best bets, in that order. Ranger: go with two weapon (long sword/short sword style) and focus on animal handling and survival skills. Barbarian: go with long sword and shield, or go with a bastard sword and use it two-handed with power attack. Otherwise, get some archery feats and focus skills on animal handling and survival. OR multiclass barbarian/ranger! I have played a wild elf barbarian/ranger in the past and it was great fun! |
| Hogre10-31-03, 04:47 PM | If you are using 3.5 rules then I would definately say druid. You have free weapon proficiencies and the BAB to take advantage of them. You will hurt a little on hitpoints, but not much and you will excel as an archer. Elven paladins aren't bad, but the abilities overlap more than complement each other. Elven sorceror involves either hiding a lot or dieing a lot. A d4 hit die combined with a -2 to consititution insures that you will never have enough hitpoints. Ranger and Barbarian are also good choices. Ranger almost has to be an archer, but the barbarian can be your average meatshield. The d12 of the barbarian makes the -2 to con not matter as much. |
| HighlandsTraveller10-31-03, 06:04 PM | Elf plus sorceror equals lowest hit pts possible! Elf druid isn't bad but I've seen a few. Paladin sounds interesting - not as often played but since you mention CG alignment maybe you should look at the holy liberator in the cleric and paladin expansion book (defenders of the faith I think.) |
| Xarrith10-31-03, 06:50 PM | I agree with everyone who suggested ranger. They're fun to play, and fit your listed requirements. There's also no reason a straight fighter wouldn't work for you either though. It may sound boring, but fighters are front-line warriors, always in on the action. In 3.0 fighters and rangers have the same hit die, but in 3.5 the ranger is reduced to a d6, while the fighter still has that d10 that will help offset the -2 CON your elf gets. |
| WarriorElf24010-31-03, 09:55 PM | You all were incrediable helpful. Well, Aruene is now a ranger, since the majority said it was good. I think it will help her hit points alot. Also, a longsword is something rangers can use, and elves are skilled with them. Am I right? I use v3.5 and I already have a druid. I think since I am going for the woodsie, swordie, elfie thing,a ranger is best, since it is the recomended race for a ranger anyway...that and a wizard, but no offense, I find wizards boring...dont hurt me :D thanks you all soo much. Post any other ideas, such as how to run her now. All I have left is to find a group. Everyone says it is strange...but I disagree...i have some friends who are interested. Thanks again. :D |
| Ithilorien11-01-03, 01:03 AM | With the elven -2 constitution she will be much better as an archer than a sword-fighter (sorry to say). Also, Reaper has some really beautiful female elven archer minis (yes, a pretty miniature is one of my concerns when I make a character). http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=1883&cat=&page=3 My advice would be to keep a short sword on hand for backup but to foucs on the archery path and max your stealth (hide, move silently), perception (listen, search, spot), and survival skills. The elven keen senses synergize well and you can make an excellent scout, archer, and tracker - the abilities quite a few will most associate with a ranger. |
| WarriorElf24011-01-03, 07:53 AM | Thats true. Haha, thanks for that info, it helped alot. I am kinda new to D&D so all this info is very helpful. Thanks! :D |
| Larus11-01-03, 09:53 AM | Go for the sorcerer, multiclass with fighter and become a bladesinger! Read the Tome and Blood for further explanations. |
| Xarrith11-01-03, 09:56 AM | Well, as for how to play her, I agree with Ithilorien. That is the ideal ranger :) I'll also add the advice that you pick, for your first racial enemy, something along the lines of kobolds, orcs, or goblins. In a first level campaign, you'll run into lots more of those than the more exotic creatures. Personal experience talking there. My first ranger picked giants at 1st level, and has yet to see a giant at 5th level. We have, however, seen oodles of kobolds and goblins, and even a few orcs. |
| Lagunna Cid11-01-03, 11:46 AM | Ok. The best for an elf is ranger, monk(yeah), wizard, sorceror and rogue |
| Ithilorien11-01-03, 01:36 PM | Originally posted by Lagunna Cid Ok. The best for an elf is ranger, monk(yeah), wizard, sorceror and rogue Actually, I think most would disagree with you on the account of any class other than ranger and rogue. Unless your DM is letting you use uber-scores the elves' constitution penalty makes for a frail melee combatant, so monks are out and in terms of wizards and sorcerers they are losing a whopping 1/4 of their potential hit points each level. d4 Hit Dice + Constitution penalty = dead character. |
| WarriorElf24011-01-03, 02:55 PM | Yeah, I agree now with Ithilorien about the dead character  I reread the whole evles and sorcerrer thing and it makes no sense to do so. So, Aruene so far is an elven ranger, with a longbow, shortsword, and am I missing anything? |
