I heard that one of the many books, made it possible to be an assassin class at level 1. As in your total character level is 1. I don't know how that it is possible since you are required to have a hide and move silently of 8, but I would greatly appreciate anyone that could help me.

I know you could have been an assassin in first edition D&D, but I heard that this assassin class was for 3.5.

Also, can assassins be true neutral, or do they always have to be evil?

Are you sure you didn't hear someone talking about a role rather than a class? Any class can be an assassin from any level, but that doesn't mean they're an Assassin. (It does mean the designers probably need to consult their thesauruses more often, though.)

i know of a not WotC book that was assasin from level 1, they had to be evil, and they got a gimpy version of death attack untill around level 5th level when they got the real death attack ability.
its possible to expand the assasin to a 20 level class, but it seems a bit strange to have a level 1 assasin. Always struck me as something you came to later rather than you trained in from the get go. Like you start out as a combat focused rogue with hide and sneak and disguise and sneak attack and then finally you have enough proficency to learn the true arts of the assassin.

thats just one man's opinion. If your world has a plethora of assassins then mabey there are level 1 assassins. I know people who play in worlds like nataro do alot of level 1 ninja types of classes.

The assassin class in Cityworks is pretty balanced, if you think rogues are underpowered.
But it's cool.

I've seen a third party source which allowed playing an assassin at level 1.
It's not at all the same one as the standard D&D one, though.

There's going to be a playable Assassin base class in the upcoming Dungeonomicon. It's part of the same series as Tome of Necromancy and Tome of Fiends. The goal is to put it up when the new boards get together. So that should happen... four days ago.

In the meantime... here's some preview text:

Assassin
"I kill people. Individually, you are a person. Collectively, I think you count as people."

An assassin is a master of the art of killing, a vicious weapon honed by experience and inclination to learn the myriad ways to end a life. Unlike common warriors or rogues, an Assassin does not study various fighting arts or muddle his training with martial dirty tricks, he instead studies the anatomy of the various creatures of wildly different anatomies and forms of existence, and he uses this knowledge to place his blows in areas vital for biological or mystical reasons. Stealth and sudden violence are his hallmarks, and various exotic tools and killing methods become his tools.

While most societies consider assassination to be a vile art, or at best a dishonorable or unvalorous one, the reasons that drive these killers vary. Cold-hearted mercenaries share a skill set with dedicated demon-hunters, differing only in the application of their skills. Only the most naïve student of ethics believes that all killing is evil, or that nobility cannot be found in a mercifully quick death.

Crimson Contracts has a base class called the Hit Man that would serve as a good assassin class.

The Assassin's Handbook has an assassin base class.

The Thieves' World Campaign Setting has an assassin base class.

Power Classes: The Assassin has...you get the idea.
