He means you are using the company's website to ask other people to send you pirated copies of that company's books (which is illegal, yo).

And that's pretty funny.

All the data in that book is owned by WoTC. It's not OGL material, the only legal way you can get your hands on it is go and buy the book.

and...they can't prosecute me if the data is given to me. i checked this out so don't even try to say that they can.

Er... Yes, they can. Ever heard of copyright law?

I can photocopy a Complete Arcane book and give it to a friend, and that'd be against the law. This is exactly the same. Just go buy the book, it's not *that* expensive and includes a ton of non-Warlock goodies.

anyways why are you guys bent on discouraging me from this. look my dm is a total (*******). he's making us type up a ten page essay on our characters. i thought on it and i figured it would be easiest to do a warlock. however i need the data. so if you help me out i will be very grateful. so please quite riding me on this dilema.

magedlord you're just hanging out for a banning arn't you? I mean going onto the official site, and asking for an ILLEGAL copy of there work, and then telling people who warn you about the illegality (not a word but w/e) of this to shut up? You, my non-friend, seriously need to learn a few more lessons in life.

Life is pain. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.

No, really. I'm touched by your difficulties.

Go buy the book and stop soliciting illegal materials.

Why is it you thought it would be easiest to write up a character of a class that you don't even have reference material for?

Write up a fighter, monk, sorcerer, paladin, or some other core class. They're in the PHB, and if you don't have one of those, they're in the SRD, which is free for download.

On a slightly less related note, why does your DM require ten pages? That's a sure sign of a jerk DM (this is, after all, a character you could lose at any time). Drop him, or give him a one- or two- page background and tell him he can take it or leave it.

Better yet, ally with the other players. EVERYONE bring in a one page background. If he doesn't like it, he can find a new group.

Let me back off my irritation for a moment.

If you are as new to D&D as you claim, and not a troll looking to stir up trouble, then I appologize for my tone, though not for the sentiment behind it.

It is absolutely abnormal to require that amount of background from a player. In most cases, between one and two pages should cover everything of interest in a character's life. It isn't necessary to explain everything from cradle to now; in fact, it's counterproductive to have to lay down a full account of the character's life, because that can act as a straightjacket to character development later on. This goes for you AND the DM -- you can't add events and people later to flesh out the character as you become more comfortable and want to tie him into the world, and the DM can't throw in history between NPCs and your character as plot points. As a side issue, it also tends to produce characters with unrealistically dramatic lives, just to fill space.

Beyond that, DMs that require such huge backgrounds are typically into player abuse. They often are the ones who think a game is "DM vs Players" and think the best end of a campaign is a total party kill (TPK). The fact that you had to spend hours writing background just makes the "victory" sweeter for such sadistic DMs; they're looking for power over you, not a cooperative game that produces a fun time for everyone.

keenath i already tried to get the others to turn on him, they don't care half of them are asians who love to type away. i tried to find another dm but well there just aren't any in my school and all attemts to find a different dm outside of school were shot down even faster. by the way i thought a warlock would be easier because i can spend half the essay on his family tree and then he can't complain. well whatever, though i am begining to believe that he's into player abuse as you called it. in our last campaign he killed all of us off, though it was kinda my fault. :( . oh well.

EDIT:i don't mean to sound racist but i'm just stating the facts.

If you just want background for an essay, I would say the Warlock is close to the Sorceror.

Otherwise, check out this official Wizards Web Site link for info on Warlocks:

OK, let's prevent the dissemination of copyright material on the Wizards Community boards. If there are websites on the WotC boards, that's fine. Thanks.
