| Lycanthromancer05-04-05, 02:21 PM | Here's an idea that I had for putting the Sorcerer on-par with the other spellcasting classes (in addition to other things, like a few more skill points, a few more class skills, and useage of Quicken Spell as a Move-Equivalent Action)... Spell Infusion (Su): At 4th level and every 4th level thereafter (8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th), the Sorcerer gains access to a Spell Infusion Template that he can add to any appropriate spell he can cast (much like a Metamagic feat). Like a Metamagic feat, a Spell Infusion Template can use a higher level spell slot, when applied, to cast the (more powerful) spell. Unlike a Metamagic feat, however, a spell augmented by an Infusion Template can utilize multiple lower-level spell slots to create an Infusion effect. For instance, a 1st-level spell can be cast with an Infusion Template if a second 1st level spell slot is expended in the casting. Both spell slots are used up just as if they had been used to cast 2 1st-level spells. A spell cast with a Template is otherwise identical to a spell cast with a Metamagic feat. Casting times and other effects (such as Spell DCs and Overcoming Spell Resistance) remain the same (except where noted). When stacked with a Metamagic feat or another Infusion Template, spell slots are expended in one of 3 ways: 1.) If using the heightened spell-slot level indicated by the individual Infusion Templates, simply stack spell-slot levels like you would with multiple Metamagic feats. 2.) If using multiple low-level slot Infusions, simply add all the spell slots together and expend them all. 3.) If Infusing a spell with lower-level spell slots and using either a Metamagic feat or the heightened spell level of another Infusion Template, add the heightened spell-slot as you would with a Metamagic feat, then expend the spell-slot(s) indicated by the Infusion Template in question. This spell-slot cannot be of lower level than the level of the original (non-modified) spell, although a higher-level spell-slot may be used, if necessary. For example, Fireball is a 3rd-level spell. Enlarging it makes it a 4th-level spell. The Energy Infusion Template requires that you either a.) use two 3rd-level spell-slots, or b.) use a spell-slot two levels lower (for Metamagic feats and heightened spell-slot levels). Thus, you cast an Enlarged Fireball using a 4th-level spell-slot, and Infuse it with the Energy Infusion Template using a 3rd-level slot (you would normally be able to use a spell-slot 2 levels lower, but since the minimum spell level needed to Infuse a spell is 3rd, that spell level is used, instead). Spell Infusion Templates only work on Sorcerer spells, not on magic of any other kind (even Wizard spells), although Prestige Classes that allow the character to gain caster levels count as Sorcerer levels (if the Sorcerer caster levels are the ones being improved). Certain Infusion Templates interact with specific Metamagic feats and other Infusion Templates in specific ways. These effects are noted in the Infusion Template descriptions. Definition - Metamagic level: This is how many spell levels are added if the Infusion is treated as a Metamagic feat. Definition - Multiple slot level: This is how many extra spell-slots are expended during an Infusion of multiple spell-slots, and what level of spell-slots to use. Definition - M & M: This is how many spell-slots are expended during an Infusion when a Metamagic feat (or its Infusion equivalent) is being used in conjunction with multiple spell-slots. Energy Infusion Metamagic level: +1 spell level. Multiple slot level: 1 spell-slot of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot, 2 levels lower. You can partially change the nature of your energy-based spells. Choose two of the following energy types: Acid, Cold, Electricity, Fire, or Sonic. You may now apply one of these energy types to any spell you cast that has an energy or elemental descriptor (Positive Energy, Negative Energy, Acid, Cold, Electricity, Fire, Sonic, Air, Water, or Earth). That spell now has the original energy descriptor as well as the new descriptor. Half of the spell’s effect is based on the energy type that you gave to it; for instance, if you applied the Electricity energy type to a Fireball, half of the spell’s damage would be Electricity damage. Metamagic: The Energy Infusion Template works normally with any Metamagic feat except as follows. For any Metamagic feat that changes the energy or elemental descriptor of a spell (such as the Energy Substitution feat), the Metamagic feat is applied first, and the Template is added second (adding bonus damage and DCs where appropriate). Special: This Infusion does not stack with itself. Special: You may take this Template more than once, but you must take a different set of Energy types each time. The third time you take it, you only get the last energy type available. Force Infusion Metamagic level: +1 spell level. Multiple slot level: 1 spell-slot of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot 2 levels lower. Your energy-based spells are partially-solid. You can imbue any direct-damage spell with an energy or elemental descriptor (Positive Energy, Negative Energy, Acid, Cold, Electricity, Fire, Sonic, Air, Earth, or Water), with the Force descriptor; this descriptor is in addition to the original descriptor. Half of any damage dealt by the spell is now a Force effect, which means that it affects incorporeal creatures, deals full damage to objects, and completely bypasses all forms of damage reduction. Metamagic: The Force Infusion Template works normally with any Metamagic feat except as follows. For any Metamagic feat that changes the energy or elemental descriptor of a spell (such as the Energy Substitution feat), the Metamagic feat is applied first, and the Template is added second. Special: This Infusion Template does not stack with itself. Bane Infusion Metamagic level: +1 spell level. Multiple slot level: 1 spell-slot of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot 2 levels lower. Your hatred of certain creatures fortifies your spells against them. Choose 3 types of creatures from the Ranger’s favored enemy list on pg 47 of the Player’s Handbook. Whenever you cast a spell against a creature that is one of your “favored enemies,” you cast the spell at +2 caster levels when you use this Infusion Template. Metamagic: The Bane Infusion Template works normally with all Metamagic feats and Spell Infusion Templates. Special: You may take this Spell Infusion Template multiple times, but it does not stack. Each time you must choose another 3 creature types from the Ranger’s favored enemy list. Special: This Infusion Template does not stack with itself. Energy Infusion, Improved Metamagic level: +2 spell levels. Multiple slot level: 2 spell-slots of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot 1 level lower or 2 spell-slots 2 levels lower. Prerequisite: Sorcerer must have the Energy Infusion Template as a class feature. Your manipulation of energy-based spells is impressive. As the Energy Infusion Template, but it imbues the spell cast with +1 to each damage die (if any), +1 to the DC of the spell’s Saving Throw (if any), and +2 to overcoming spell resistance (if any). Metamagic: See Energy Infusion for details. Special: You may only use the Improved Energy Infusion Template for energy types that you have already gained through the normal Energy Infusion Template. Special: The Improved Energy Infusion Template does not stack with itself. Vampiric Infusion Metamagic level: +3 spell levels. Multiple slot level: 3 spell-slots of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot of the same level, or 2 spell slots 1 level lower. Your spells can drain the life-essence of any creature they damage. You can apply the Vampiric Infusion Template to any direct-damage spell. When you use this Infusion Template, you can drain 1/30 of the damage you deal to other living creatures as permanent hit point recovery (minimum hp recovery is 1hp, unless no damage was dealt). Any hit points you gain in excess of your maximum are gained as temporary hit points, and last for 1 round. This Spell Infusion Template changes the spell’s school to Necromancy. Metamagic: This Infusion Template works normally with all Metamagic feats and Spell Infusion Templates. Infusion Templates: This Infusion Template cannot be used in conjunction with the Spiteful Infusion Template. Special: This Infusion Template does not stack with itself. Special: Vampiric Infusion cannot be used with any spell that already drains hit points, such as Vampiric Touch. Spiteful Infusion Metamagic level: +1 spell level. Multiple slot level: 1 spell-slot of the same level. M & M: 1 spell-slot 2 levels lower. You are willing to endure pain to ensure that your foes suffer. The Spiteful Infusion Template can be applied to any direct-damage spell. When the Spiteful Infusion Template is applied, the spell deals an extra 1d6 damage per (the original) level of the spell being Infused, and in return, the caster takes one-third of that as damage to herself. The caster cannot negate this damage in any way (since it is empathic damage, the caster is damaged even if she would normally be immune or resistant to the damage type in question), but it is subject to being reduced or negated by a successful save and/or spell resistance (according to the rules of the specific spell in question) by the targets of the spell, and if no damage is dealt, the caster takes none as well. If the damage is dealt to a number of different creatures (say, by a Fireball spell), the caster still only takes one-third of the damage rolled for the spell as a whole. For spells that last a specific duration, the caster can choose whether to keep the extra damage or not on a round-by-round basis on her turn, although when this extra damage is “turned off,” it cannot be “turned back on” in any way short of re-casting the spell. Metamagic: This Infusion Template works normally with all Metamagic feats, including Maximize Spell (the extra damage is Maximized for both caster and target(s)), and Empower Spell (the extra damage is multiplied by 1.5 for caster and target(s)). However, only the Heighten Spell Metamagic feat actually increases the spell’s level, so it is the only one that increases the damage that the Spiteful Infusion Template deals based on the spell’s level. Special: The Spiteful Infusion Template does not stack with itself. Special: This Template cannot be used with the Vampiric Infusion Template. ... ... ... Do you think they're a bit overpowered? They should be a little less powerful than Metamagic feats, but they're potentially more useful for the Sorcerer. Also, any other ideas for some nifty abilities? |
