| farghal04-05-05, 07:36 AM | I’ve made this class some time ago and noticed him on my pc again I changed some skills so it can go with 3.5. And I was wondering what the people now a day would think of it :). Please let me know Avenger http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cw_ag/75396.jpg The barbarian shouts “I can’t keep this up much longer!” while his frosting greatsword hits the hydra in an intense blow. “You have to my spell’s almost finished” The wizards whispers to herself. The Hydra screams at the hit of the barbarian. As a reaction the hydra punches the barbarian with one of it’s five remaining heads in great speed. The barbarian is knocked against the wall of the cave. He moans and loses consciousness. “This is not good” the rogue say’s “we should flee while we still have the change”. “Well you’re the one that wanted the artifact so badly.. wasn’t it?”. “So you’d better cover me while i try to get Grek” The cleric reply’s. The wizard unleashes a white flash from her hands that shoots towards the hydra. The flash hits the hydra with great speed.. but the hydra still advances with rage. “Why didn’t anything happen?” the rogue asks. “I tried to banish him but he’s to strong!” the wizard reply’s. With these words the wizard is throw against the wall with great force, hearing the bones snap on impact. “I’m leaving” the rogue say’s. When he turns to start running he sees an figure standing in the opening of the cave. He tries to make out what he is. The stranger walks in out of the light. The rogue taps the cleric on the shoulder making him turn around. “Who’s he?” the cleric asks. “He’s our rescuer or our damnation” the rogue reply’s. Behind them they here a great roar of the hydra who is still advancing. The stranger begins to run and passes the cleric and rogue with great speed. While he runs he takes a greatsword from it’s back who instantly starts to burn. With his other hand he aims at the hydra and a dark red flash roars towards the hydra. On hit the hydra stops and seems disoriented. The stranger is still advancing towards the hydra his body seems to grow more muscle and with each step he seems more determined. With great force the avenger hits the hydra in a great blow. The hydra backs up and seems surprised by this great force. “Quick” the cleric shouts to the rogue “here’s a healing potion go help grek!”. “I’ll go and see if Aradrial is alright”. The battle rages on and the hydra only has eye’s for the stranger. The stranger backs away and a dark red beam comes from his hand hitting the hydra in an fatal blow. The beast collapses and all is still. Grek and Aradrial are coming by still very weakened and confused of what happened. The cleric stands up and walks towards the stranger who is still standing firm. “Thank you very much for…”. Before the cleric can continue the stranger interrupts him. “Don’t thank me I’m here for my own reasons” He reply’s. “O and what would that be?” The rogue suspiciously askes. “The artifact that is hidden in this cave”. “O no! Your not going to take it it’s ours we where here before you!”. “And I thank you for finding it for me” The stranger say’s. “You WHAT?”…. The stranger doesn’t reply. He walks towards the altar taking the medallion with the picture of 5 snakes in it. “It’s ours” The rogue snaps. And runs towards the stranger, who turns around very fast and puts his hand in the stomach of the rogue. “It’s mine now” He whispers, when a great red flash explodes in the stomach. The rogue collapses and the strangers walks out of the cave slowly. The cleric stunned by what happened runs towards the rogue. “So he was neither” he whispers to himself. Story of Dandra, famous evil Avenger People who become Avengers are mostly people who have seen horrible things in there youth. Or people who are filled with anger from themselves. Most Avengers come from places where war is raging or where gangs or bands rage and pillage villages. They have seen so much murder and bloodshed that there mind is going crazy. but instead of going insane they learn how to use this mental & physical pain to there benefit. The Avenger is a fighter who draws more than melee combat from his strength. He can use its strength to do so much more. The avenger is also a great strategist in combat. If you’re looking for trouble and you come to face an avenger, then look another way. Adventures: The Avenger will go on an adventure because he cannot get inner peace and longs for revenge on the one who made there youth so horrible. So going on an adventure and fighting the many terrors of the world is a way to get strong enough to seek revenge after that they continue to try and forget the horrors he/she has seen. Characteristics: The Avenger can use its strength to perform great things. He is filled with rage by the horrible things he has seen and the many friends he has seen dying. This makes the Avenger a bittered but not unfriendly person. The Avenger is also a person with a lot of honor and will always try to keep it high. Thought he is not suicidal and leave when he knows he cannot win. He will always object at laying traps or creating an ambush unless there is no other option. Alignment: Avengers can be of any alignment, but lean towards neutral behaviour. Chaotic Avengers are rather rare because there are very few chaotic characters who have honor. Religion: Avengers often pray to the gods St. Cuthbert, Wee Jas and Kord Background: Avengers are people who have seen many horrible things, such as dying people and bloody battles this comes with great mental and physical pain. The thoughts of a Avenger are never still. The thoughts about people who die and the sounds of massacre just keep going on inside. Because of the power he can draw from its body and mind he lacks the ability to really defend him self. He’s the kind of guy who say’s “why would I need defence if I will destroy them before they can hit me?” Races: Every race can become a Avenger. But the Humans, Elves and half Elves are the most common because they can not suppress the pain that much. Halflings and gnomes don’t go into war very often only if need be so they are not as common. Dwarves and Half-orc can take more than the other races and are rather rare to find as an Avenger. Other Classes: The Avenger can get along best with fighters because of their way of fighting with a lot of special combat tricks. Barbarians are well respected because of their great strength. The Avenger get just get along normally with all other classes except for the rogue, who (in his eyes) fights without honor with its “sneaky attacks”. Abilities: Strength is the most important for the Avenger because it determines the power of his abilities. Constitution is good because the Avenger lacks at defense, so some extra buffer will probably come in handy. Charisma is also important for the intimidating and some abilities. Alignment: Any. Hit Die: d6. Class Skills The Avenger class skills are Bluff(Cha), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Ride (Dex), Survival (Wis), Swim (Str) knowledge (history)(Int), knowledge(local)(Int) and search(Int) Skill Points at 1st Level: (2 + Int modifier) × 2. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 2 + Int modifier. Starting age: As a druid. CLASS FEATURES All of the following are class features of the Avenger. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Avengers are proficient with all simple and exotic melee weapons, plus two additional Martial melee weapons of their own choice. Avengers are proficient with all light armor. They are not proficient with shields and ranged weapons. Feats: The Avenger does not gain any bonus feats normally given every 3 levels. Ability’s All the Avenger abilities should be treated as Supernatural Abilities Raging sword: The Avenger can use his inner pain to enflame the weapon he or she is wielding. You may add 1 fire damage per strength modifier for 1 round per level. This ability can be used once per 2 class levels per as a free action. Missiles of anger: The Avenger can materialize his anger and strength into “magic missiles”. Same as magic missiles but the Avenger gains 1 extra missile per 3 class levels. Each missile does 1d4 + strength modifier damage. This ability may be used once per 3 class levels per day as a full round action. Fearless: The Avenger becomes immune to all fear effects. Flashback: The Avenger can show short flashbacks of himself in the mind of a target that will confuse him for a short period of time. You must make a ranged touch attack, if you hit the target must make a will save (DC 10+ ½ class level + charisma modifier) or be confused for 1 round. This ability can be used once per 3 levels of avenger as a standard action. Ray of rage: A red beam of rage shoots out of the Avenger’s hand. This is a ranged attack. The beam deals 1d8 per 2 class levels + strength modifier force damage . This ability may be used once per 5 class levels per day as a standard action. (range is 50ft. The beam itself is 5 ft. Wide). Feel the pain: The Avenger can torture somebody mentally. He holds the targets head with two hands and can give him all the pain at once that the Avenger has suffered in his entire lifetime. The target is overwhelmed with horrible flashbacks and sounds. This ability is mostly used to gain information from a none “willing” person. The target has to make a will save (DC 10+ ½ class level + charisma modifier) You gain a +1 per 2 class levels on gather information and intimidation checks. It can however also be used in combat. You must make a touch attack with a –6 penalty because you have to touch the head. If the attack succeeds the same happens and the target is scared for 1 X ½ class level rounds. You can use this ability once per 4 levels of Avenger a day as a standard action. strength of morale: The Avenger can produce a great yell that fills the hearts of all allies within 60 ft with great courage and good morale. All allies gain +2 on attack rolls, +2 on damage rolls and +4 on all saving throws versus fear. This ability can be used twice a day as a standard action and lasts for 1 round per charisma modifier. Body blast: The Avenger can let his inner torture explode from within himself. From the place where you’re standing a red power flash emits from your body. Every one within 5 ft + an additional 5 ft per 8 class levels gets 1d8 per 2 class levels + strength modifier damage. This ability can be used once per day as a full attack action. Boost body: With his anger and rage the Avenger can boost his body some more giving him 10 temporary hit points and +4 to Strength . But because his body is boosted and therefore somewhat larger he isn’t as agile, so you get a –2 on dexterity. This ability lasts for 1 minute X ¼ class level + constitution modifier. You can use this ability once per 4 class levels per day as a standard action. Battle cry: The Avenger makes a Battle cry that stunts al opponents within 30ft. All opponents must make a fortitude save (DC 10+ ½ class level+ charisma modifier) or be panicked for 1+charisma modifier. If the save succeeds the target is shaken for 1+½ charisma modifier. This ability can be used twice per day as a free action. War eye: If you want to win in war you will have to know how strong or how weak your opponent is. The Avenger has become very good at this and can use this to see how many HP target living opponent has. This ability can be used once per 3 class levels per day as a free action. Break Focus The avenger shows target opponent one of his worst nightmares. The target must be within 25ft + 5 per 2 levels. It’s an automatic hit. If the target was casting a spell the spell is lost. Target creature provokes attacks of opportunity from all creatures threatening it. Target can make a DC 15+ ½ class level + charisma modifier Concentration check to overcome this effect. You can use this ability once per 10 avenger levels a day as a standard action. Hardend Cry: The Avenger shouts with a great force, which can damage objects or deafen opponents. A Cone shaped burst with a range of 30 ft Comes out of the mouth of the Avenger. All creatures take 1d6 damage per 2 class levels. All within the cone must make a reflex save (DC 10+½ class level+ charisma modifier) for half damage. All within the cone must make a fortitude save (DC 10+½ class level+ charisma modifier) or be deafened for 1d4 +charisma modifier rounds. And they must make a will save (DC 10+½ class level+ charisma modifier) or be stunned for 1 round. You can use this ability once per 5 Avenger levels as a standard action. Burning pain: The pain of the avenger streams out if his body, setting it on fire. Everyone who is standing directly next to the Avenger or is attacking him will have to make a reflex save (DC 10+ ½ +strength modifier) will take 1d8 X per 2 levels of avenger fire damage. If the Avenger is attacked with a weapon whose range is more then 5 ft this damage does not apply to the attacker. This will last for 1 round per ¼ class level + constitution modifier and can be used once per day as a standard action. War focus: The Avenger has had many practice in battle and may choose to focus on one opponent on that opponent he gains +4 on attack rolls,+4 on damage rolls and +2 to the critical range and +2 to AC vs that opponent. But suffers a –4 on AC by attacks made by any other opponents. Insight: The Avenger can predict how an enemy is going to attack him. This is because of the many creatures he has fought in battle. This gives the Avenger a +2 on AC and he is immune to charges and grapple attacks and critical hits against him have a 50% miss chance. Cleaving Strength: The Avenger gathers all his strength and slash his way through opponents. You can make 1 attack at every opponent standing within 5 ft of you. Per additional target after the first you attack you gain an additional +2 on attack and +2 on your damage roll for every attack. This is because an Avenger can tap into his anger more easily when the pressure is high. This ability can only be used when wielding a slashing weapon. Using this ability will cost a full attack action. You can use this ability once per 5 class levels per day as a full round action. See all: You confer on the subject the ability to see all things as they actually are. The subject sees through normal and magical darkness, notices secret doors hidden by magic, sees the exact locations of creatures or objects under blur or displacement effects, sees invisible creatures or objects normally, sees through illusions, and sees the true form of polymorphed, changed, or transmuted things. Further, the subject can focus its vision to see into the Ethereal Plane (but not into extradimensional spaces). The range of see all conferred is 120 feet. See all, however, does not penetrate solid objects. It in no way confers X-ray vision or its equivalent. It does not negate concealment, including that caused by fog and the like. True seeing does not help the viewer see through mundane disguises, spot creatures who are simply hiding, or notice secret doors hidden by mundane means. In addition, the ability’s effects cannot be further enhanced with known magic, so one cannot use see all through a crystal ball or in conjunction with clairaudience/clairvoyance. This will last for 5 minutes per level and can be used once per 10 Avenger levels a day as a full round action. War spirits: The avenger can call upon the spirits of the people who has died in war. An army of ghost flow over the battlefield with high speed covering an area of 50 ft wide. All opponents take 10d10 + Cha Mod damage and are stunned for 1 round. All opponent within the area may make a fortitude save for half damage and instead of being stunned they will be shaken for 1d4 rounds. This ability can be used once per 12 Avenger levels a day as a full round action. Combat movement: Because a war zone is not an easy place to move the Avenger has the ability to move much more freely. You are freed from spells and effects that restrict your movement, including binding, entangle, grappling, imprisonment, maze, paralisys, petrification, pinning, sleep, slow, stunning, temporal stasis, and web for 1 minute per 4 levels of Avenger. You can use this ability once per 12 Avenger levels a day as a free action. I'm definitely open for comments let me know what you think!!!!! |
| farghal04-05-05, 02:43 PM | i would really like to have some thought about this class... PLEASE? |
| Insane Pixie04-05-05, 02:54 PM | i would really like to have some thought about this class... PLEASE? I would love to give comments on the class, but I can't interpret the class features without understanding why the character gets them. That is where the flavor text comes in. Not to be mean, but it looked like it was written by a blind, retarded monkey. The entire time I was reading it, I felt my brain cells slowly dying. |
| farghal04-05-05, 03:43 PM | oke it is my first own build class EVER... but 2 years ago people understood it.... sorry but i really don't know whats so bad about the flavor text. may'be you could give me some pointers on how you think it should be then? (ps i can handle critisism but it would help if you could add how it could be solved (it's called feedback ;) )) thanks for the reply |

| DolArrah04-05-05, 06:06 PM | This would be better as a prestige class, not this core class, as, to be an avenger, something had to happen to uyou, making you wish to get revenge. Also, why can't you lawfully avenge something? |
| farghal04-06-05, 04:19 AM | This would be better as a prestige class, not this core class, as, to be an avenger, something had to happen to uyou, making you wish to get revenge. Also, why can't you lawfully avenge something? sorry i'm not making it a PrC. There are made by years of war so making it PrC would be difficult as for the non-lawful thing OOPS forgot to change that :P Sorry |
| Asghan04-06-05, 06:35 AM | This class have strange will save progression. |
| Lina_Inverse04-06-05, 07:08 AM | the flavor text makes it clear this should be a PrC. a core class is something you have when you walk out of school/home/whatever. a 15year old kid hasnt had years with which to see war. |
| Harkanshar04-06-05, 07:24 AM | I just skipped over the class, so I won't go in on it deeply. I must say I like the idea, but some finetuning is needed First thing: this class just gives too much good abilities. Work in this. It just is to strong. I'd go for 2+ skillpoints instead of 4+. Compare it to the other fighting classes.I'd make it a prestige class, for the same reasons as mentioned before.instead of going for the strange will save propgression you can give it the iron will ability, together with the "poor" will save progressionHave a good look at what abilities you want to keep or if you just don't want something like a spellcasing ability such as with the paladin, ranger etcD6 HD progression together with the highest BAB progression don't make sense I'm empty for now, sorry I can't continue, must do something else....... Bye |
| farghal04-06-05, 07:43 AM | first of all ...I'm not making it a PrC. If you think it should be, be my guest your free to do so ;). I just skipped over the class, so I won't go in on it deeply. I must say I like the idea, but some finetuning is needed First thing: this class just gives too much good abilities. Work in this. It just is to strong. I'd go for 2+ skillpoints instead of 4+. Bye 2 skill points jup think your right nope no PrC ;) i like the iron will feat instead of "strange" progression (why is it strange btw?? there not rules for it or anything) sorry i don't understand this one ->(Have a good look at what abilities you want to keep or if you just don't want something like a spellcasing ability such as with the paladin, ranger etc) The D6 is explained in Background:. it's a class with great offence but really really WEAK defence. You will have to use it tactfull to get out of a fight alive that's the whole idea |
| Harkanshar04-06-05, 07:56 AM | I say you MUST make it a pr class whether you like it or not ;) About the HD and the BAB. Warriortypes have greater HD, not because they're stronger, but because they can go with the blow or shrug of damage. I understand your point, but the two fill eachother. Have you ever seen a clas with low BAB and high HD? sorry if it's vague, but I can't explain it another way. With the spells I meant the next. Because you have a lot of (strong) abilities you have to make choice, because of balance-issues. Either give him less abilites and/or make them weaker, or give him a small spell-casting ability such as the paladin, blackguard or whatsoever. In this manner you can keep all abilities without making it too strong. About the "strange" will save. That progression is never used in WOTC materials. Instead they give abilities like at lvl1 or 2 +1 on save, at lvl11 +1 on same save and at lvl20 again +1 on that save. Hope you can do something with this |
| Lina_Inverse04-06-05, 09:56 AM | nope no PrC ;) then why does the flavor text mention YEARS OF WAR.someone seeing YEARS OF WAR.is not a lvl1 charecter.is not some kid ready to take on the world.hes a grizzled vetren whos seen it all.and thus has EXPERIENCE. i like the iron will feat instead of "strange" progression (why is it strange btw?? there not rules for it or anything) there are rules for it.theres two save progressions, good and suck.theres also medium if you branch out from just D&D.but thats it. |

The only guideline that is really used as a rule is "The DM is always right" ;) EDIT BTW i think 2 years of war would make everybody's head spin but that's just me |

Have you ever seen a clas with low BAB and high HD? sorry if it's vague, but I can't explain it another way. well i think i know what you mean but the things you say are for all core classes and a lot of extra and home made classes. But it's not a standard the fact that it got a high BAB and low HD makes it different. With the spells I meant the next. Because you have a lot of (strong) abilities you have to make choice, because of balance-issues. Either give him less abilites and/or make them weaker, or give him a small spell-casting ability such as the paladin, blackguard or whatsoever. In this manner you can keep all abilities without making it too strong. well you are kinda working against yourself here. You've got a low HD (really low for a melee fighter) and you've only got light armor prof. on the other hand you get some REALLY powerfull offensive things. 2 years ago when i put up this class it took 25 post for somebody noticed that it is balanced it that way and put it down. (that was a relief, otherwise i had to post to 10 people shouting it was to powerfull :P ). but that's the whole idea of the character VERY low defence combined with VERY high offence. so the fact that the ability's are very strong is because he lacks a good defence and HD About the "strange" will save. That progression is never used in WOTC materials. Instead they give abilities like at lvl1 or 2 +1 on save, at lvl11 +1 on same save and at lvl20 again +1 on that save. Hope you can do something with this well i've changed it because the iron will really fits the character. BUT my point was that you don't have to look at everything WoTC does. the fun thing about D&D is that you can change and create everything you want the way you want it. (ass long as it's balanced offcourse ;) ) Thank you very much for the reply :) |
| farghal04-07-05, 01:00 AM | :bump: |

Give me a bit of time ;) P.S. about the defence VS offence i know offence is stronger but the defence is really making it a difficult class to play believe me ;) |
| arclord200005-04-05, 02:51 PM | I agree for it to stay as a core class instead of a prestiege. The way I see an avenger, from my own sources and not even from the presented description, follow with a core class, and still flows with the presented description. Here is my thoughts: Usually an avenger stems from a life purpose to pay back an offender for what they did in the past; revenge is the leading factor and the avenger simply wants to "avenge" someone or something dear to him/her. This life would begin from as a child, when no major experience has occurred. They have "seen" war and terrible things, but have not gotton involved due to being a mere child. This would follow the Core class. For Example: An 8 year old child is out playing one day when a band of villians raid his village and kill everyone in the village except for him. The leader of the band finds the child and mocks him and even gives information of who he is, then leaves the child alive to tell others of what happened and spread fear of that villians name. The child feels too weak to fight back, but plots to repay the villian for the destruction of his family and village. He turns to a life of revenge and becomes an avenger, always striving to become stronger until one day he can stand up and face the villian in combat. If you disagree with this view, who cares, it is my view. I think it should remain a core class. |
| farghal06-26-05, 11:53 AM | woh it's a really long time ago you posted this i just saw it :P. I like it it really fits the flavour. thanks for the support :) |
| farghal06-26-05, 11:59 AM | i actualy changed the flavor a bit to get it straight. If anybody has any more comments. Let's see what people think after 6 months of D&D argumentations |
| togapika06-26-05, 01:48 PM | What effect does Break Focus have? |
| blade7601-06-06, 07:04 PM | Can this class have some epic feats, I plan to try and incorporate this class into my campaign ,perfect for my main character and the powers are a nice touch but I want to use this cass a core class caould you create epic feats for this class. |
