My previous character died (our frenzied berserker ran out of things to kill and then killed me), but since he died protecting the rest of the party and saved their lives, the DM is letting me start a new char at the same level of my old char. For the first time ever, I rolled amazingly good stats:

18
16
15
14
14
12

Wow... I mean... wow. For once, I can be ANYTHING! But the thing is, I don't know what I should be? I was thinking either a human monk or paladin. Does anyone have any ideas? Oh and we play 3.0.

A few questions:

How big is your party?

What does your party already have?

What kind of campaign are you running?

Actually, any information you can tell me about your campaign, characters, and storyline would be both helpful and interesting.

I've just had to generate a new character of the campaign I'm in, and I found it really coems down to this:

What does the party need?

In my case I was the party wizard. Although I thought of a number of interesting alternatives to play, there was no reason for the party to take any of them along, but they really really need (not played the next session yet) a new wizard/sorceror type.

So, instead I concentrated on how I could play an interesting wizard and came up with a character concept I hope will drive the others nuts - while being exactly what they need. This even surprised the DM who had come up with a really powerful idea for a variant on one of my original list of interesting characters (shaman with a charisma of 25 at 5th level + 1 race HD + 1 LA).

I think everyone (including you) will enjoy the game more if you play something that fits the party's need. Yes, this is a shame if you want to play something totally different and you need to fill the same spot (you need 2 people to generate new characters at the same time then). That said, have a chat with everyone and see what people think the party is missing - wether or not you agree, it could easily give you ideas to build on. Also if you are replacing a healing cleric with a healing cleric, instead of one hwo is a pacifist, try a battle cleric who always complains about having to heal (but does keep the spells back for it) or something else wierd...

Good luck

PS it sounds as if your party needs someone who can stop a frenzied beserker - that or a new main fighter while they fire the fb as being too dangerous...

I agree with other two, but also be something your good with, if your not good with spell casting at all, dont be a wizard or such, even though the party needs one if you can use it right theres no point.

There is only one solution to a problem like this.
Put the 18 into Dex for no apparent reason, the 16 into wisdom, the 15 into charisma the other 14 into constitution and play a Bard :D

Bards can heal (if they feel like it) fight (if they feel like it) sing (again. . . ) and then cast some arcane spells. . . all while wearing light armor and maxing out UMD to cast any spell they can get a scroll for.

so . you got killed by a Frenzied Berserker ... and nobody's complaining about him yet??

Kewl .. odds are your stats are better than his, build another Frenzied Berserker .. and when all hell breaks loose ... you kill him ... favour returned .. :smirk:

*sigh*

ok, on a more "innocent" approach ...

Monk ... Monk's really do well when you can feed them high stats like those ...

You'll sometimes here folks grousing about 'Multiple Attribute Dependency' - that is, there are some classes, like Paladin and Monk, that really 'need' multiple reasonably high characteristics.

Now's your chance to play one of those that works /really/ well.

Just to chime in with the others...Classes that can really use a lot of good stats:

Paladin
Monk
Hexblade
Psychic Warrior
Swashbuckler
Cleric (Depending on the type)

Ok, I disagree with all of you that said to see what the group needs. I say, PLAY WHATEVER YOU WANT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE GROUP HAS/NEEDS!

So maybe the group will be all fighters and wizards....ok, no rogue type? Deal with it. Hire a NPC.....buy wands, potions, take a level or 2 in rogue, whatever.

Trying to balance out every group is BOOOORING! Play a cool guy that you like and just have fun. Maybe you run into a problem you can't deal with.......guess what? It is a game and if you have a good DM, he will have options for you to figure out how to deal with that problem.

I am currently running a group that is almost entirely Fighters and Rogue type characters. No cleric, and recently no wiz type. They deal, they cope, and most of all, They and Me HAVE FUN!

Str: 18
Dex: 12
Con: 16
Int: 14
Wis: 14
Cha: 18

This includes 3 stat increases at level 4, 8, and 12, and would make a kick-ass Paladin.

with stats like those I would go Halfling Paladin then PRC into Outrider/Cavalier

Or halfing Druid/Ranger Prc into Outrider

BTW I agree with Mesacraft it is a bad idea to base your character off of the party needs... sounds like metagaming to me... Play what you want I just propose something I think would be fun to play

I'm gonna see if my DM will allow that. If not, I'm going to be screwed, because I can't decide between druid or monk! Ack!

Frenzied Beserker, Meet Stunning Fist.
And Disarm.

...Then beat the snot out of him, and when he falls, you have a handy-dandy new melee character to take his place. ;)

OK monk it is! I looked over the paladin and figured that a monk would be a lot cooler to play.

I would suggest cleric. Clerics are powerful and with high stats they are POWERFUL. I would suggest a melee cleric since it will allow you to fill a similar role as before, but have spell capability on top of it. If you are playing FR, I would highly recommend a Gold Dwarf Priestess of Haela Brightaxe. Her favored weapon is greatsword. You will be such a smackdown machine that it won't be funny.

STR 16
DEX 12 (10)
CON 15 (17)
INT 14
WIS 18
CHA 14

I'm pretty sure he doesn't allow gold dwarves. He hates regular dwarves enough as it is.

Monks are good. Since you playing 3.0 I can't suggest what I was gonna.

However, with those stats..a Sorc/Monk cross would be cool. Just a level or 2 of Sorc to get a few cool 1st level spells to augment your monk would rock.

No... suggest it. We allow some things from 3.5. The main reason why we don't play 3.5 is because the DM and the rest of the players don't want to pool money together and buy the 3.5 books. We have two laptops with the 3.5 books but the DM insists we need hard copies.

So what was your idea?
Nightro

A 3.0 monk you say?

I just happen to have a 19th level 3.0 monk. His stats were not nearly as good as yours, but he is one of my favorite characters.

I love the monk class too. Great saves, good skill list w/decent skill points. There really is no reason to leave the class for a PrC since the monk gets so many great abilities. I do kind of like the idea of multiclassing sorc though. The only problem with that is that you either have to keep levels equal or be human.

Anyways what kind of monk were you looking for?:

Half-orc monk 1
Str - 16
Dex - 16
Con - 12
Int - 12
Wis - 18
Cha - 13

Elf monk 1
Str - 15
Dex - 20
Con - 12
Int - 14
Wis - 16
Cha - 12

Dwarf monk 1
Str - 15
Dex - 16
Con - 16
Int - 14
Wis - 18
Cha - 10

Skills:
Hide, move silently, listen, tumble, & jump are your best friends at low levels. In fact, tumble is one of the monks best friends for his entire career since you can tumble through threatened areas at half speed and still move farther than anyone else.

As you go up in the low to mid levels: balance, climb, & maybe a little knowledge arcana.

Mid to high levels: concentration can let you use your spell-like abilities without provoking attacks. I also like to sprinkle in some diplomacy.

The greatest thing? These are all class skills!:D

Feats:
Can you say Spring Attack? Nothing like jumping in to hit a guy and then moving out of his move range. And the mobility (pre-requisite) will help in case you miss a tumble check:cool:

I am particularly fond of the Elf and Dwarf builds. The Elf doubles as a great archer. The Dwarf has fighter-like hp and outruns a barbarian. (Now when was the last time you saw that happen)

(not that i'm implying that you would need to run from the barbarian, you can probably give him a run for his money in a toe to toe fight if you're a high enough level)

Wis: 18
Cha: 12

Ummm...and how do you get those stats from your rolls? According to your original post, your numbers were:

18
16
15
14
14
12

It seems here that you replaced one of the 14's with 15 in either str or dex and applied your +1 to it.

Anyways, I'd still like to hear something about your campaign. If you're looking for it, I'm sure you'll find some interesting ideas for character background if you tell us a bit about the world.

then afet you have enough lvls kill the fb in order to join the psionic assasins!

revenge and strength in one

you know what they say about vengence......
