BAB and Base Save advancement [Archive] - Wizards Community

I didn't find quite a good topic for my thread, I hope here it is right.

Lately all my player were going into prestige classes and since they usually had multiclassed before with two core classes some gap arose, regarding their abilities.

The fact i fing mor and more iritating is, that a charakter that multiclases two core classes and one prestigeclass all with a moderate BAB and all with equally three levels.
This results in a BAB of +6 which is equal to that of a cleric of 9th level, who had a bonus moderate advancement the whole time.
But compared with good saves the combination of three classes leeds to +9 (+3 each) which is significantly higher than the +6 a character has, who increased in one good class.

Is this fair ?

Should the sole idea of multiclassing grant such a benefit in addition tho the powers a prestige class or core class normally has ?

06-05-06, 09:45 PM It all comes down to whether a player prefers a generalist or a specialist for their character.

Say you have a level 9, Rogue3/Cleric 3/Bard 3
Say there is also a Level 9 character of any one of the above classes.

Now the character that has multiclassed will find few situations that they wont be competent in....however, it may not take much to get in over their heads where mere competancy wont be enough.

That's where the specialist comes in and should completely outshine the generalist.

There are benefits and drawbacks of playing to either one.
The generalist will be able to do a bit of turning, sneakiness and carousing in many situations. However whenever there is a pure Rogue, Cleric or Bard in a similar situation they are truly designed for the multiclassed character may suddenly find their character on the lack-luster side.

Don't know if that answers any of your questions, but they are some opinions.

Generally multiclassing favors saves, and causes BAB to suffer. It is usually not worth worrying about, but could bother some.

Unearthed Arcana detailed a fractional Save/BAB system, that would eliminate the problem bothering you, but may cause others. If players are taking multiple dips in classes with 2-3 good saves to exploit this, you may want to consider those rules.
