Baelnorn question [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-08-04, 05:50 PM Can a character that becomes a baelnorn advance beyond level 4? One would assume that since they are so closely related to liches, they could perhaps become.. what... demi-baelnorns I guess? Anyone know anything about this?

04-08-04, 09:52 PM You're going to have to educate me on something before I could answer that. I wasn't aware that 3rd Edition had provided a version of the balenorn. What book is it published in?

To the original poster, Im not quite sure what you mean, to become a Baelnorn you would almost certainly have to be above 4th level.

04-09-04, 10:14 AM I guess I was a little unclear. The Baelnorn is a good aligned elven lich. It shares all the same abilities as a lich aside from the fear aura and phallactery which it doesn't have. As such, I assume that a Baelnorn class (though I haven't seen one laid out; only a template) would be the same 4 level class that a lich is. Beyond this is the realm of the demi-lich. I've never heard of a demi-baelnorn, so I'm wondering if a Baelnorn is only a 4 level class or if they too can advance farther.

And as far as I know, the requirements for becoming a baelnorn would be those for becoming a lich ( i.e. level 11 spellcaster, knowledge, etc.)

04-09-04, 12:29 PM Lich is a template, not a class. And same goes for Baelnorn. And there are no rules for a demi-baelnorn.

04-09-04, 12:55 PM I have not seen the Baelnorn in MoF, however based on the info you provided I would say that unless the lack of a phylactery affects the ability to obtain Demi-Lichdom, make a Demi-Baelnorn template equivalent to the Demi-Lich template.

04-09-04, 09:01 PM There are no stats on becoming a demi-baelnorn. Remember, a Baelnorn doesn't seek knowledge and magic like a regular lich does. Regular Liches become insane for their search for never ending knowledge. A Baelnorn's purpose is being a guardian, or a tutor in elven houses. Of course they can search for more knowledge and become more powerful, but they do not have that insane drive that normal liches do. A Demi-Baelnorn would not go with the concept of the template.

04-10-04, 10:37 AM Well, the text says an elf becomes a baelnorn to become a guardian, a mentor, or to achieve some kind of magical achievement or other goal, so one could argue that they could have a drive to attain power. But, I agree that they do not have a crazed, desperate, do anything to get it drive for power that the lich has. So, there really is no such thing as a demi-baelnorn then.

See, I'm working with some friends to make a persistent world in Neverwinter Nights for those who want an experience much closer to Pen and Paper than normal NWN modules. As such, I'm working on prestige classes that players can take, but instead of the "hmm, I think I'm going to take this class now" system, prestige classes are going to be HARD to get. One, you'll likely need to discover knowlegde before you can take one of these PrCs, and you might just require training or apprenticeship also before you can take any of these classes. At the same time, we're hoping for a lot of PrCs in order to give players something resembling the freedom of PnP.
