My brother and his friend are making new characters. So far my brother has come up with Ogre barbarian that will eventually get the ravager prestige class.
His friend is becoming the divine arch type. So I'm being the magic caster and I have no clue what to be, though I know I want to be anything that isn't in the PHB 1. Also suggestions for the divine arch type would also be helpful.

It sure would be helpful if you could post some general information about the campaign. Like what books you have access to, what level, what races, and what you're looking for.

As a generic arcane spellcaster wizard/sorcerer are probably your best bet. Most of the others are very specialized. The warlock and Wu-jen are decent arcane casters out of the CA. Exactly what kind of arcane casters are you looking for? The warlock is more of a spontaneous type of class while the Wu-Jen is an oriental style wizard.

Divine archetype? Theres lots of generic divine type characters. Whats funny is the cleric class only really fills one of them, the healer. All your other ones shaman, inquisitor, holy warrior, Priest, etc etc are filled by other classes or PrCs. The cleric can imitate them with a few spells but I find them to be lacking in general. The concept of the cleric is great and makes the class extremely versatile, but WoTC went a little crazy when designing them. I personally hate playing a cleric,it doesn't feel like you're playing a "priest" IMO with +2 skill points wearing full plate.

Sorry for the rant.I can't really give you good answer with such a vague question. There are just so many, if you could narrow it down just a bit that'd be great.

Well mostly we haven't agreed on campaign/ adventure yet. We have tried a few games. Also I guess I have a lot to learn about the divine arch type thought it was just a bunch of healers.

That really doesn't help much. Any scrap of info you could give could potentially help. If you just want a general impression of all the classes you could just do a search, there is a class index somewhere on this site. Once you've narrowed your search maybe post again or make a new thread.

Play a sorcerer or a warlock. They are much better for beginning players (which I assume you are. Correct me if I'm wrong) Your other party member is going to start out at level 6 and have less HP than he should. Also, find some way to cure ability damage, because your ogre buddy will fall fast to charisma or wisdom attacks.
Anyway, Sorcerer or Warlock.

So far I was thinking of Beguiler, might need a bit of thief skills for back up, war mage or other magic / fighter varient in case I get singled out in combat, or wizard/ sorcerer just for spell selection. I know I'm going back on what I said but I rethought it. Also sorry about the vagueness.

You might want to think about going beguiler 1/wizard 5(or 4 I can't remember the prereqs) ultimate magus. Thats one of my favorite combinations, lots of versatility.

Thanks a Beguiler/ Wizard mix sounds great! I think I'll go find a good starting campaign now.
