| Hellsbells06-11-07, 09:08 PM | I don't remember were this was but there was a thread about a barbarian/bard not being able to use most or all bardic abilities, first of all I think this is stupid because of 2 examples, 1) Death metal (sorry as a fan of all things rock, roll, and metal i had to put that in). 2) Wardances. If savages can be inspired into a frenzy by a bard I think that primitive bard should be able to rage and perform at the same time. If you still disagree with me then someone design a feat or prestige class for barbarian/bard cross classers. I'm lazy and would probably mess it up anyway. |

Death Metal and Wardances weren't done while spewing bloody foam out the mouth and being unintelligibly psychotic with veins popping out of one's head. They're done in a "frenzy" of sorts, but not a battle-kill-hulk-smash rage. Besides, a rage only lasts rounds long. How many inspiring death metal songs last 54 seconds before the band falls over in exhaustion? It would just sound like noise. No rhythm, no form. Heck, they wouldn't even play, just break stuff or attack the crowd. A war-dancer going into a rage is wasting his special abilities - since when does a short-term burst of relentlessness and power improve dancing, something that requires sensitivity (to nature, to the music, to the audience) and grace? Also, I've played a couple barbarians. I reserve my rages for when I need them (until I have like 4/day, and tireless rage). = = = = = Aside from all that, a Barbarian/Bard would be a funny class to play. Probably good times. Some fights you're rallying your comrades with a war chant as you gut your enemies, other times you just lose it, forget the war chant, and go all hulk-smash. It's nice to have variety. :D |
| Neutronium_Dragon06-11-07, 09:21 PM | The barbarian/bard can't use most of those because the Rage ability limitations specifically disallow them. Several bard songs, bardic knowledge, and a bard's spellcasting are all prohibited for one reason or another. However, three bard songs (which are probably the ones that the barbarian would be most interested in, and which are certainly most apt to resemble wardances) would be usable: Inspire Courage, Inspire Greatness, and Inspire Heroics. These three don't require a skill check and don't mention concentration being required, so he'd be able to use them just fine. |
| Hellsbells06-11-07, 09:23 PM | I stand corrected you two are right, however I still like my idea for a Barbarian/Bard prestige class. |
| Hellsbells06-11-07, 09:34 PM | Slightly of topic but i just had an idea. Picture a dwarf, half-orc, or archetypical norseman after a heavy night of drinking. Wahla, Drunken berserker. I took the drunken master prestige class for monks and made it for barbarians. personally i really like it. |
| malignor06-11-07, 09:52 PM | Looking at the Drunken Master, the abilities would work well for a Barbarian too. All you'd have to do is switch the prerequisites, drop the mystical-type stuff like the AC bonus, Medicinal Purposes and Breath of Flame abilities, ditch the obviously martial-artist move Corkscrew Rush, and then make up for it by boosting the hitpoint die to D12, change out the skill list to something like (Balance, Bluff, Climb, Craft, Gather Information, Intimidate, Jump, Listen, Swim), and add in 2 instances of "+1 rage per day" and one instance of "DR +1/-". Then call it the Raging Tavern Brawler and you're done! I think it'd make for a fun character. |
| runestar06-11-07, 10:52 PM | Well... Q: Dear Sage, If my bard has the rage ability, can he use bardic music while raging? --Jonas (Producer's Note: There's a death metal joke somewhere in this question, I'm sure of it.) A: You can’t use any ability that requires concentration while raging, nor can you use any Charisma-based skill other than Intimidate (so Perform is out). Thus, only a few of the bardic music abilities are available to a raging bard: * Countersong: No (Perform check required). * Fascinate: No (Perform check required). * Inspire Courage: Yes. * Inspire Competence: Only lasts 1 round per use (concentration required). * Suggestion: No, because you can’t use fascinate. * Inspire Greatness: Yes. * Song of Freedom: No (requires concentration). * Inspire Heroics: Yes. * Mass Suggestion: No, because you can’t use fascinate. That seems to fit the bill of wardancing, since he can still inspire... Not familiar with death metal, so can't comment ... |
