so the class feature says barbarians get fatigued until the end of the current encounter. When is that?

In my last game, they players spent ten rounds in a fight that sprawled from one hallway to an arena, where there was a brief pause as the demi-boss said a short " how dare you tresspass blah blah blah " and summoned a fiendish ape into the arena.

I don't think 12 - 30 seconds really finishes their first encounter, and kept the initiative going, ruling that this was the same encounter, and that the barbarian was still fatigued.

Was I right to do this?

Sounds about right to me, since it was one long, drawn out combat that never left initiative order. Wow, that must have been brutal on the PC's.

12 seconds = 2 rounds, 30 seconds = 5 rounds. Both are probably not long enough to catch your breath.

you have no idea, its the Age of Worms "three faces of evil" encounter in the battle temple of hextor, they got lured into the arena, and only barely survived. It came down to like two 3rd level characters vs. a 6th level priest and a 2 fighter/1 cleric.

they only barely survived ( some really almost, making their roll to stop bleeding just as they reached -9 hp ).

Yes. The arena was the next step of that same encounter.

In ToB page 40, it basically says that it takes a minute of not fighting for you to count the encounter as over (for purposes of recovering your manuevers). It seems like the same could be said of barbarians.
