Barbarian animal companion [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-17-04, 04:05 PM One of my player's wants to include the animal companion special ability on his advancement table for his barbarian character, he is prefering to take it at 4th level duplicating the ranger ability. He wants to give up a single use of his rage ability/day (rage 2/day as 4th level barbarian), and my instincts say he's not paying enough of a price. My divination thus cast, opinions come to my aid.

07-17-04, 04:18 PM I would have to disagree with you there. I think the price is too heavy, and he is overlooking the price, just in the other direction. He is losing his only(class based) way out of a tough situation. Now, he only has the ability to rage on time untill 8th lvl. An animal companion is not worth a rage, as you can see, a Druid is the only class that truely benefits from the companion. I say you come up with something else as a penelty, but then again, that's my opinion.

07-17-04, 06:03 PM hmm... I don't think the price is too high at all; yet, I also think the price might be a bit too little.

But the first message in my head says "relatively" balanced.

Make him take the leadership feat instead if he wants an animal companion.

07-17-04, 09:45 PM The easiest way to give him what he's asking for is to offer him the Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) feat. It's like a less-powerful version of an animal companion, but it's still pretty good for one feat.

07-17-04, 10:14 PM I'd just give him a "pet", some animal indigenous to his region with no particular special abilities other than maybe the Beast of War template from the MM2.
