Barbarian class variant from UA:

A barbarian who prefers crafty hunting over pure ferocity might choose to exchange his rage ability for certain ranger class features.

Gain

Favored enemy (as ranger); archery combat style, improved archery combat style, and archery combat style mastery (as ranger).

Lose

Rage, greater rage, indomitable will, tireless rage, mighty rage.

What would you think only Rage would be worth ?? Would it be worth Favored Enemy ??

Would you think either Rage or Favored Enemy would be worth a Fighter's bonus feat ??

Favored Enemy & the combat style really aren't worth the lose of Rage(and I would gladly reverse engineer that variant for use with Ranger in half a heart-beat if allowed). Rage is very powerful, although, I will admit, the idea of an Archer that has a d12 hit dice with decent class feature seems somewhat tempting. With a bit more, the trade off would be perfect.

According to champions of the Fighter, Fighter feats would be too much for the Barbarian to gain. I disagree, but only for games where a alternative/remade Fighter is used.

Ultimately, I'd have to say either add a few class skills to the Barbarian's skill list to better serve the Hunter concept or give them 2 or 3 more abilities that better re-enforce the intended concept, such as additional Archery-based Fighter feats to go with the combat style.

I am only talking about Rage (at 1st level), not the advancements of Rage, like Greater Rage, Tireless Rage, Mighty Rage.

Would Rage (1/day) be worth Favored Enemy (only what is gained from 1st level) or a Fighter's Bonus Feat ??

A watered down version of the Rage progression(just Rage itself with some reenforcement) is apparently worth Druid's Animal Companion, as per this Variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#druidVariant DruidicAvenger).

That's about what Rage is apparently worth, as per what WotC says. Animal Companion is pretty potent, so...

Sure, you could give out a Fighter feat for every increase to your daily rage use & every time rage improves. Note that that will be about 10 feats(more or less). However, obviously that's way more powerful than the Fighter(though, Fighter's kinda weak). So, I suppose if you wanted, you could give them like 6 feats no problem.

Thanx for the link, I had forgotten about that variant.

Anyone else have an opinion on . . .

Would Rage (1/day) be worth Favored Enemy (only what is gained from 1st level) or a Fighter's Bonus Feat ??
