Now I have been trying to figure out a bunch of formulas lately, so I don't have to look in the book everytime someone says "what's the X for class Y at Z level?" :P

Now for Damage Reduction for Barbs, they get it at 7th level, and every 3 levels thereafter right?
So what do you guys think?
(Also if none of you are clear I'm looking for formulas, like abiltiy scores to determine the bonus it's
Ability -10 /2
Ala 76 strength is a +33)

:confused:

Tell us, why in god's name would one need a "formula" for a thing so stupidly easy as the Barbarian's DR progression? You know it kicks in at 7th level and increases by 1 every three levels. That IS your formula. Everything else will make it more complicated.

I do sincerely hope this was humor gone to the wrong board ...;)

(Class Level - 4) / 3, round down. No less than 0.

If you want a strict formula that gives you exactly what the DR should be at any level (after rounding) with no "minimum of 0" stipulation, then too bad. It would take a whole lot of work, probably using Taylor polynomails, and after it's finished you would rather just get the book and look it up than sub in all the variables.

Why minimum 0? It'd be fun to see a Barbarian taking an extra point of damage for his first 3 levels...

Joking, joking

Thanks LordPendragon
That's all I wanted. Things are alot easier to figure out when you have a simple forumula instead of someone saying
yea it starts 11th level and increases every 7.... that takes longer to figure out than (X-4) /3

Just out of curiosity...what things?

Just out of curiosity...what things?
What are the base saves of a 11/5/3/3 level fighter/ranger/druid/wizard, without knowing how saves go up, that could or couldn't be a bi**h to figure out.
The ability modifer of a stat of 93....
Those kinds of things.
That and I'm curious and I like to know the exact formula of things...
so shoot me.
or rag on me about my calculating skills :D ... ya know....
whatever.... :P

thanks to those who contributed an answer to my question.

P.S. when did the boards get a profanity filter?

P.S. when did the boards get a profanity filter?Okay, 3 levels to calc... 3rd, 5th and 11th... at 3rd G|B = 3|1, at 5th G|B = 4|1, at 11th G|B = 7|3. Good ("G") is level/2, plus2. Bad ("B") is level/3. Both round down.
Fighter has G|B|B, Ranger has G|G|B, Druid has G|B|G and Wizard has B|B|G.
Fighter11 = 7|3|3, Ranger05 = 4|4|1, Druid03 = 3|1|3 and Wizard03 = 1|1|3.
Final saves are 15|9|10.

Stat mod is (stat-10)/2 round down, so 93 is same as 92, which is 82/2, which is +41.

For barbarian, you just said it when you described it. It's increment is once every 3 levels (level/3) but starts at level 7, so at level 7, the final value is 1. This is Jr. High polynomials.

DR = (Level-X)/3 ... when Level = 7, DR = 3

1 = (7-X)/3 ... we need multiply by 3 now to cancel out the /3

3 = 7-X ... if it isn't obvious by now, keep going. Multiply by -1 to make it "palatable"

-3 = X-7 ... if it still isn't obvious by now, keep going. Add 7 to both.

4 = X ... okay, there.

So... DR = (Level-4)/3

Done.

No, no, that's not what I meant. I meant: What benefits do you get from knowing formula for barbarian's DR? I'm really curious because I can't think of any.

Well, I suppose if you memorized it, you could predict a Barbarian's DR at any level without a book. Because nobody wants to count up from 7 to find out the DR on their level 40 Barber.

Ah, that's actually a valid reason, even if it comes up very rarely. Thank you.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
That's the exact reason I wanted to know the formula.
