In my friends campaign i am playing a barbarian TANDAR.
str 16
con 15
dex 10
int 10
cha 8

Rage
Uncanny Dodge
Power Attack
Cleave

Chain shirt
Great axe
Heavy Flail

Tandar is a level 2 barbarian who would rather suck than not be roleplayed. However, I noticed during character creation I COULDNT FIND A USE FOR MY GOLD. I bought my gear and have about 100g leftover. The DM disallowed the purchase of potions or anything with magical properties. Tandar caries 100' of silk rope with a grappling hook, a set of manacles, a valuable statue (easier to carry than 70 gold pieces), a valuable necklace (in lieu of 50 gold pices) and a backpack. It is assumed I also carry some rations and water. Other than that, tandar has no real adventuring gear. For some reason (and this never struck me till now) my characters never actually take adventuring gear (cept my ranger who always carried some chalk for passage marking.)

Some notes of interest that may lead to gear choices:
member of the late steelmails clan- banished from their homes
became hired muscle on a merscenary ship for quite some time
good climber (for his size- though hes no more nimble than you or i)

If you guys could help me think of some things he might like to have along thatd be GREAT! thanks!

As a barbarian, youre probably going to carry a lot of the party gear, but, before even considering what your DM is like or thinking about environmental factors, heres what I would buy:

Bedroll or Blanket (You gotta sleep on something)
Caltrops (Youll wish you had some)
Candle
Chalk
Crowbar
Flint and steel
Hammer
Lantern, hooded
Mirror, small steel (Peek around corners, avoid gaze attacks)
Tankard (Youre a barbarian and a sailor? Must have grog!)
Oil
Pitons
Pouch
Sack (You need something for all that loot.)
Soap (Just kidding)
Torches
Whetstone
Climber’s kit (This is your specialty – expect to be challenged)

I’d also get :

a wooden shield (Half-way though your adventure, you might decide you want a better AC)
a small slashing weapon (Maybe for when you use the shield; definitely for when you find yourself in a tight space or worse, swallowed whole)
a ranged weapon (You don’t want to be useless when your opponent is flying overhead.)

Also, red-gregor was right: you should get a piercing wepon, just in case.

thanks! that really does sound like sound advice. The more i look at the listing the more i can find ways to rp it as part of my character. I was aprehensive about many things due to it 'not fitting in' with my story and character development, but i think i may feel otherwise now.

yet, i have a couple issues with some of the suggestions- perhaps you can help give me reasons my character might have them or be willing to have them? even know how to use them?

the mirror- not real sure why my character would have it- perhaps saw it used as a signaling device on a ship?
oil- im assuming this would be for the hooded lantern? If im just carrying oil (for making fire im certain) what justification does my character have?

the more i think about things like alternate weapons and even a shield it makes sense that i would have seen my clan men bearing them as well and could see their merit.

the oil if for when you have alot of opponites you throw that and a torch and watch the fireworks it is just a trick that worked for me

you could have seen it as on the ships pirates burn ships with oil and fire to make the fire burn qiucker and have a better area

i suppose i could probably use that as a justification- surely tandar has seen many things by his age (33) as a warring clansman and a mercenary on a ship. thanks guys!

He would have seen many, many things there, especailly considering that ships are around ports, and even if you dont go out of sight of land yourself, you are surrounded by veritable globe-trotters. Sailors are actually MORE likely to have seen new, crazy things like mirrors than the typical farmer.

Unless your barbarian just wandered out of the bush, he's going to have seen just about everything your average adventurer has. Even with a fairly low, insanely low Int. score, he's going to see that somethings are pretty handy to have around, like light, blankets, a back-up weapon, etc.

what about a mount? If you want to spent much money into a non-magic thing, take an (unusual) mount. While simple horses are quite cheap (not for you), a real good heavy warhorse with 8 hit dies, an elite array of attributes, better nattural armor and/or more speed than the normal horse, with some armor proficency and a personalized (;)) mithril full plate ... that would be quite costy.

Or you look at some cooler critters. A pegasus or griffin can cost some 1000th and is you want a good trained, obedient dragon, you can definittly add another two '0's.

unfortunately marax, 100 gp is too little for a mount- forget the fact that my dm just banished me from the main town- i would be hard pressed to find a mount anywhere else in the area right now even if i had the money :P
