As far as I concluded from the core rules, a barbarian characted might fly into rage while using a shield. Wouldn't it been more natural if (s)he must have abandoned it when raging?

No, but it would make more sense if (s)he attacked with it. Personally though, I just use light armor with my barbarians, dastana, and a 2 handed weapon. Been awhile since I played one though, but it was much fun when I did. I just wish that BoED had been out then, cause there's a Barbarian PrC in there that gets smite evil and a few paladin-like spells. It's the perfect CG version of a paladin.

Historically the viking berserks used to typically fight with an axe and armoured themselves with a shield. They didn't abandon the shield when raging, but they did have a habit of chewing on it while psyching themselves into a frenzy.

Does then a chewed up shield give an armour class penalty?
