barbarians start out not knowing how to read or write. when i hit second level i plan to change to become a sorcerer. will i automatically learn how to read and write common? or do i still need to spend 2 skill points to learn it?

You automatically learn to read and write all known languages that you can speak when taking a (core) class that does not specifically indicate that you retain illiteracy.

Well since Illiteracy is the class feature that causes the restriction, and when you get another level you lose Illiteracy, yes by definition.

Somewhat foolish, but true.

Personally, gaining the ability to read and write for ONE language you already speak is ok, by ALL can be rather rather foolish. But then , for a Barb to have a large language set would mean great Int anyway, so I suppose there is little a Hero cannot do.. :D
